[YEP-DC] PD opportunity: Master's in Math Education

Dear YEP DC,

I'm excited to be a part of this group!  I'm presenting at the conference in March, and as a part of my responsibilities at the University of Maryland, I teach Master's level courses.

I wanted to share this great opportunity with the listserve.  It is a Master's in Mathematics Education designed for 4th-9th grade teachers, in the University of Maryland's #3 ranked department of Math Education.  I highly recommend this program as I am an instructor, and it's a great opportunity for DC teachers since tuition is charged as in-state.

We have a created a Master's in Education in Middle School Mathematics that addresses the demands of Common Core Math Standards.  The program is a three-year, content-based master of education for current middle school teachers or those interested in moving to these grades (4- 9th grade). Starts this coming Fall 2015! All courses will be offered at The Universities in Shady Grove. Classes are once a week, on Tuesday. Free and easy parking. Our program offers the possibility to apply for scholarships of excellence every Spring.  In addition, the tuition is fixed for in-state and out-of-state teachers at the same rate. No GRE required.

This program has been selected for Improving Teacher Quality grants three consecutive times in the State of Maryland. This recognition has allowed us to continuously evaluate and improve the program to address the needs and goals of participant teachers as well as the school district staff. 

 

Our Goal

Its main goal is to develop a cohort of highly qualified middle school mathematics teachers by strengthening their content knowledge and their professional knowledge about teaching mathematics to students in diverse school settings in the era of Common Core State Standards.
