About the School
The William E. Doar Jr Public Charter School for the Performing Arts (WEDJ) blends rigorous academics with world-class arts instruction provided by artists from renowned dance, musical, theatrical, and visual arts institutions. WEDJ is the only public charter school in Washington, DC to provide professional-caliber arts training for students in PreK through eighth grade at no cost to families.
WEDJ serves more than 430 elementary and middle school students, a majority of whom are African American, and 85% of whom qualify for free/reduced priced lunch.
In pursuit of an academic program that matches the success of its arts program, WEDJ partnered with TenSquare, a proven school turnaround partner, to launch a comprehensive school improvement effort in January 2014. Within five months of starting the interventions, student proficiency on the 2014 state exam increased by almost 12% in math and in four out of six grades in ELA. WEDJ's Performance Management Framework (PMF) score also increased over 11 points, from a borderline Tier 3 score of 36.5 in 2013 to a solid Tier 2 score of 47.6 in 2014.
The TenSquare team will continue to partner with WEDJ leadership throughout SY 15-16 and beyond. TenSquare will support teachers at WEDJ through intensive instructional coaching and professional development, curriculum and planning support, and school and classroom culture development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
A teacher at WEDJ is responsible for the following:
Curriculum and Planning
· Creating curriculum including unit and lesson plans aligned to Common Core standards
· Structuring compelling, standards-based lessons that challenge students' critical thinking and align with lesson, unit, and grade-level objectives
Instruction
· Utilizing strong content knowledge to effectively present material to students
· Incorporating joy and rigor in lessons and so that students are excited about and invested in their academic excellence
· Employing multiple methods to accommodate different learning styles and abilities, including special education students and English language learners
· Participating in all professional development opportunities
Assessment
· Assessing students academic and developmental growth through observation and a variety of assessment methods
· Tracking and monitor assessment results in order to regularly refine teaching practices and design differentiated lesson plans
School Culture
· Create a positive learning environment that promotes high expectations and provides opportunities for all students to experience success
· Maintaining positive, professional relationships with students, families, and colleagues
· Communicating with students, parents, school staff to ensure that students are on-track in their learning and making progress towards goals
Qualifications
WEDJ is seeking educators with the following skills and characteristics:
Education and Experience
· Bachelor's degree required. Concentration or advanced degree in education preferred.
· Meet the Highly Qualified Teacher (HQT) requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act
· Two or more years of teaching experience as an elementary or middle school teacher in an urban environment preferred
Skills and Personal Characteristics
· A demonstrated ability to provide engaging, child-centered, and developmentally appropriate instruction to students
· Demonstrated ability to establish an effective and efficient classroom culture
· Ability to set ambitious goals for all students and guide them to meet the highest expectations for behavior and academic performance
· A commitment to regularly assessing student progress and using data to strengthen student performance
· Strong interpersonal skills for communicating successfully with students, families, and colleagues
· Desire to be part of a dynamic professional learning community that embraces accountability and outstanding student results
· Exceptional organizational and planning skills, and
· A positive attitude, enthusiasm, self-confidence and flexibility
