[YEP-DC] Job Posting: Founder's Associate at exciting new startup aimed at improving attendance

Present

Founder's Associate

Present is a startup with the immediate goal to increase K-12 student attendance by one million days by 2019. Present uses research-proven "nudge" interventions developed by behavioral science researchers at Harvard University to decrease absences.

Attendance is critical for student learning. When students are absent, they fall behind academically. In high school, absences are associated with increased crime, teen pregnancy, and dropout.

We're not just increasing attendance; we're also increasing revenue. And we're the first and only organization doing that. We will initially target the states covering 40% of students that fund their schools based on average daily attendance. In these states, when a student misses school, the district loses funding--$40-$80 per day. By generating extra attendance, we're thus generating extra general fund dollars for districts and CMOs.

At Present, we are passionate about:

  • Improving student outcomes—attendance, learning, graduation
  • Building a business that aligns the business model with student outcomes
  • Using experimentation and analytics to power continuous improvement
  • Designing products that don't take time from teachers and principals
  • Creating communications that all parents can understand and act on
  • Investing in design that creates simplicity and clarity for others

Position

As a founding team member, the Founder's Associate will have a unique opportunity to shape the direction and operations of Present. As the organization grows, the Founder's Associate will be well positioned to take an important operating role within the company. S/he will report to the CEO, and the position is located in Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities

In a founder's associate, we're looking for a high-performer excited to support all aspects of launch and development of a fast growing startup, including:

  • Serving as a thought partner to the founder
  • Assisting with the recruitment and onboarding of the initial set of partner districts, including digging into the details of state and district budgets and strategic plans to help us map out how to position, sell, and create contracts
  • Providing analytical support to the fundraising and budgeting processes; leading process of vetting and select accounting and bookkeeping solutions
  • Vetting, selecting and working with mail house vendors to manage production of the intervention

Even well rounded people have strengths; depending on what your strength is, we could also see you taking on:
  • Selling—we'd set you up with a region and let you tackle that, while supporting the founder's other priorities
  • Marketing—we'd ask you to take the lead selecting vendors for and developing collateral, writing copy, pitching campaign ideas, blogging, etc.
  • Research— we'd let you take the lead on figuring out the details of treatment and control group sizes, confidence intervals, and effect sizes

Over time, the Founder's Associate will have an opportunity to grow with Present, potentially moving into a role that:
  • Evaluates, develops, and brings to market new interventions
  • Builds partnerships with ed reform organizations to further the goals of Present

Both additional responsibilities and compensation for the Founder's Associate will depend on your experience and skills.

Qualifications

Above all, the Founder's Associate will be passionate about what we're passionate about:

  • Using experimentation and analytics to power continuous improvement
  • Designing products that don't take time away from teachers and principals
  • Creating communications that all parents can understand and act on

  • Feel energized working in an environment where priorities change as we learn
  • Be able to see and pursue emerging strategic opportunities
  • Have the skills to work independently and ask for help, clarification when needed

What you'll get from us:
  • The opportunity to get in on the ground floor of an exciting education enterprise that is both research-backed and has a business model (no freemium here)
  • To be part of a smart, hard-working, and kind team
  • Exposure to a startup environment—exciting milestones (first customer!) and red flags (low response rate!) alike
  • Support needed to learn and grow in your role
