[YEP-DC] Posting for Public Policy Intern with Chavez Schools

We are really excited to announce this internship opportunity with the Public Policy department of Cesar Chavez Public Charter Schools.

Public Policy Department Intern

The Public Policy and Curriculum Innovation Department (PPD) at Cesar Chavez Public Charter Schools for Public Policy (Chavez Schools) is responsible for developing curriculum for the core subjects taught at

Chavez, as well as ensuring the mission to empower our students through public policy to create a more just, free, and equal world is realized in the daily work of the schools.

 

To that end, the PPD also supports key public policy experiences students grades 6-12 engage in throughout the school year, including, but not limited to:

·    We the People school, local, and national competitions sponsored by the Center of Civic Education

·    Youth Summit on Drug Trafficking

·    Lobbying Days at both City Council and US Congress

·    Fellowship, an internship experience for Juniors

·    Thesis, a year-long policy study for Seniors

 

 

Public Policy Department Intern will work with the Experiential Learning Manager to plan and support these experiences for Spring 2015, as well as the duties outlined below.

 

Duties:

·    Cultivate and maintain relationships with volunteers and current partner organizations

·    Communicate with organizations and individuals to obtain event space and materials for public policy programs

·    Identify and execute opportunities to recruit new volunteers

·    Collaborate with Marketing Manager to promote public policy programs

·    Prepare and disseminate reminders about volunteer activities to volunteers, teachers, and system leaders as appropriate

·    Maintain volunteer database

·    Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications:

·    Strong interest in community service, community organizing, and youth empowerment

·    Detail oriented and extremely organized

·    Strong follow-through and ability to efficiently execute multiple tasks simultaneously

·    Collaborate effectively with teachers, students, and community members

·    Able to problem solve and respond appropriately to both positive and negative feedback

·    Able to maximize relationships with individuals and community organizations

·    Comfortable networking with professionals in various environments

·    Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree

·    Able to commit to at least 10-15 hours per week on a somewhat flexible schedule

·    Experience volunteering, leading service learning activities, or community outreach preferred

·    Start Date: January 2014 (flexible)
