ABOUT THE POSITION:
The National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty (NLCHP) is the only national legal advocacy organization dedicated solely to preventing and ending homelessness. Our attorneys fight for society's most vulnerable members in courtrooms and the halls of legislatures. Through impact litigation, policy advocacy, and public education, the Law Center addresses the root causes of homelessness at the local, state, and national levels.
OVERVIEW:
The Law Center is seeking a talented attorney with at least two years of experience to join our dynamic legal team. Together, our attorneys use litigation, advocacy, and media strategies to: ensure that homeless children and youth can attend school, protect housing rights for survivors of domestic violence and tenants in foreclosed properties, promote implementation of the human right to housing as an alternative to the criminalization of homelessness, defend the civil rights of homeless persons, and ensure that vacant government property can be used to provide housing and services for homeless persons. The attorney hired will focus most of his/her time on our education work, while also assisting with our domestic violence initiatives as well as other program areas as needed.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Law Center is dedicated to protecting the strong educational rights conferred on the 1.3 million homeless children and youth attending public schools. Over 25 years, we have won groundbreaking cases with significant local, state, and national impact. Our new attorney will build on this work by identifying opportunities for and engaging in litigation or advocacy efforts that will result in broad systemic reform. More specifically, the Attorney will:
- Working closely with the Director of Advocacy and pro bono counsel, engage in federal and state litigation and policy advocacy to ensure that homeless children and youth can attend school and receive the services and supports they need while enrolled.
- Develop and update outreach and education materials and conduct trainings and presentations for a variety of audiences.
- Build a legal network to enforce the educational rights of homeless children and youth.
- Provide technical assistance to legal services lawyers, advocates, government officials, and individuals around the country.
- Assist the Director of Advocacy in efforts to fully implement housing protections in the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).
- Develop and oversee law firm pro bono projects.
- Assist in grant writing / reporting and with communications activities.
- Participate in hiring and supervising interns.
- Contribute to organization-wide planning and special projects.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required
· DC bar membership or eligibility to waive in.
- Excellent legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
- Strong oral communication skills and interest in public speaking and training.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Creativity, initiative, and commitment to excellence.
- Demonstrated commitment to economic justice and to working on behalf of low-income people.
- Willingness and ability to work well with a wide variety of stakeholders including pro bono attorneys, legislators, agency officials, landlords and property managers, school officials, public interest attorneys, advocates, and poor and homeless individuals.
- Willingness to travel.
Preferred
· 2-3 years of legal practice, ideally including experience with litigation and public policy.
· Prior work in the area of education.
· Experience developing and presenting trainings for a wide variety of audiences.
· Experience with organizing or development of advocacy networks.
· Project development or management experience.
