[YEP-DC] Job Posting: NEA Fellowship Manager at Teach Plus

NEA Fellowship Manager

I. Overview of Teach Plus and the NEA/Teach Plus Fellowships

A growing organization founded in 2009, Teach Plus's mission is to improve the achievement of urban children by ensuring that a greater proportion of students have access to excellent, experienced teachers. Teach Plus aims to give effective teachers a reason to stay in the classroom by putting teacher leaders at the center of reform. The organization runs multiple programs: the Teaching Policy Fellows Program, the NEA/Teach Plus Fellowships, C2: Common Core Collaborative, and T3: Turnaround Teacher Teams. Teach Plus focuses on demonstrably effective teachers in the second stage of their careers (typically years 3 through 10) who want to continue classroom teaching, while expanding their impact as leaders in their schools, in their unions, and in state and district policy.

Teach Plus focuses on leadership opportunities that allow teachers to make an impact across several issue areas:

·         Evaluation.  Effective teachers are key to student success, but schools often have not placed sufficient emphasis on teacher quality.  Teach Plus works to improve teaching and learning by helping teachers access feedback on their practice and their students' growth. Additionally, the organization seeks to help the profession transition from a seniority driven to performance driven system through supportive, rigorous evaluations.

·         Assessment. Many current student assessments do not give teachers what they need to improve student learning. Teach Plus works to capture and elevate teacher perspectives on the types of assessments they find useful so that the next generation of assessments will be meaningful for teachers, students, schools, and families.

·         Common Core.  Higher standards are critical for student success.  The organization engages teachers as leaders in the transition to the Common Core in order to ensure its successful implementation.

·         Next-Generation Unionism.  With key demographic changes in the teaching profession, it is important for unions to find new ways to engage the high-performing, early-to-mid career teachers who have the potential to be future union leaders.  Teach Plus's goal is to work in partnership with teachers and union leaders to prove that being union-involved and advocating for a profession that values performance and innovation are fully compatible.

·         Access. Low-income and minority students are often assigned inexperienced and ineffective teachers at more than double the rate of their counterparts. Teach Plus' goal is to close the opportunity gap by creating incentives and cohort based programming for excellent teachers to work where they are needed most.

Teach Plus seeks an outstanding professional to help lead a select number of Teach Plus/NEA fellowships at both the local and state affiliate levels.  Reporting to the Executive Director of Strategic Partnerships, the individual will have leadership responsibilities for establishing and facilitating 3-5 Teach Plus/NEA fellowships (comprised of 10 teachers each)  in districts and states to be determined by a rigorous selection process.
