[YEP-DC] Volunteer Opportunity

Stand Up for Kids DC - Volunteers needed for Advocacy Team

The mission of StandUp For Kids - Washington DC is to stabilize youth who are homeless or at risk of being homeless, establish trust, and act as a resource linking youth with community services. We advocate for youth and assist them in building opportunities for a better tomorrow. StandUp For Kids - DC provides community support services to youths up to the age of 25. StandUp For Kids - DC provides important services in order to improve the general quality of life for youth. It helps youth meet their survival needs and offers a social support network. The program seeks to provide youth with access to a preventative safety net of medical care, meals, housing, and a safe place from street life.

The Advocacy Team, Directed by Emily Wirzba, is looking for passionate people with advocacy or policy experience that would like to help SUFK-DC advocate for young people in this city and the whole nation to have the basic human rights of shelter, food, and security.

As a part of the advocacy team, specific duties or projects could include:
- Research and create factsheets on statistics regarding youth homelessness
- Lead volunteer trainings on advocacy and policy opportunities
- Research and coordinate with other youth and/or homelessness organizations in the Greater Washington, D.C. metro area
- Brainstorm opportunities for SUFK-DC advocacy team to get involved in community initiatives
- Research and follow local homeless policy in the news
- Write op-eds and letters to the editor for local papers about issues surrounding youth homelessness
- Draft and help circulate petitions

Requirements:
- ability to give 5+ hours a month, or as needed
Strong sense of personal integrity
- Sincere desire to help homeless and street kids
Previous experience working with homeless or at-risk youth preferred
Previous experience with policy analysis or advocacy preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational and planning skills
