[YEP-DC] Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Diversity Speaker Series - Looking for proposals

Hi folks!

Once again Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth is looking for potential speakers for our Diversity Lecture Series. Last year, one of our speakers came off of this listserv, so I encourage you all to send in a proposal!  We are looking for passionate and dynamic speakers to give presentations on a multitude of different topics dealing with diversity in education. As an organization, we have over ten thousand students enrolled in our summer programs and over thirteen thousand that take our online courses.  Your voice could make a large impact on a great deal of young people's lives!

I have attached the proposal and I have pasted it below.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

I look forward to seeing your proposals!

Best,

Call for Proposals: Second Annual Diversity Speakers Series

The Diversity Leadership Team of Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) is dedicated to increasing the diversity of our staff and students to more accurately reflect the diversity of our society. To that end, we seek dynamic speakers for our second annual Diversity Speakers Series. Speakers will address CTY staff in a brown bag lunch setting. Sessions are 60 minutes, including a question and answer period. CTY is located on Johns Hopkins University's Mount Washington Campus in Baltimore, MD. The theme of the series is "Diversity in Education."

CTY's online courses and summer day and residential programs serve academic academically advanced students in second through twelfth grade. For students attending our residential summer programs, CTY may be their first experience away from home, and their first encounter with people whose backgrounds and beliefs are different from their own. As administrators, supervisors, and teachers, we want to be thoughtful and adept as we work with students to build inclusive communities.

A presentation could address one or more of the following questions:

§  How can we help students in their identity development?

§  What are best practices in the recruitment of staff from a broad range of backgrounds?

§  What are best practices to mediate conflicts around issues of diversity with our students?

§  What are best practices to attract students of minority groups to our programs?

We especially encourage proposals from potential speakers with backgrounds in

§  recruiting students and staff of underrepresented groups,

§  mediating issues of diversity on college campuses or in grades K-12,

§  working with international students,

§  working with student with disabilities, or

§  working with first generation college or college-bound students.

Proposals of 250-300 words should be submitted along with a resume, to rachel.haugh@jhu.edu by Monday, December 2. Please include several dates on which you could present at the Mt. Washington Campus (directions).

As part of Johns Hopkins University, CTY is an educational nonprofit for academically talented students from around the world. Since 1979, CTY has identified young people of great academic promise through our annual international Talent Search, and nurtured their intellects and personal growth through Summer Programs, CTYOnline courses, and other services. More information about CTY can be found online at http://cty.jhu.edu/about/index.html.
