[YEP-DC] New YEP-DC Blog Post: Olivia Pope, Stereotypes, and Educating Black Girls

Scandal fans love Olivia Pope. She's fierce, independent, and confident. But what would a young Olivia look like in elementary school, bright and inquisitive, raising opinions about a teacher's analysis of a text? Research shows that as a black girl, Olivia would be at a greater risk than her white peers of being more harshly disciplined for talking back. What does this mean for all of the real-life Olivias (and even those nothing like her)? Recess blogger Connie Ward, a school counselor, talks about race, perceptions, and the impact they have on the educational opportunities and outcomes for black girls. Read her post, "Olivia Pope, Stereotypes, and Educating Black Girls," for more.
