[YEP-DC] Job Posting: Education Research Assistant, Child Trends (Bethesda)

Child Trends, a mission-driven, independent organization that conducts rigorous research and evaluations and communicates and applies this knowledge to inform policies, programs, and practices to improve the lives of children and youth, is hiring for a research assistant in our education program area.

General Description:

The education program area strives to identify the educational policies, programs, and structures that create the positive conditions for learning that help youth flourish in primary and secondary school, college, career, and beyond.  Current work studies individual competencies and social and emotional learning, charter school performance, school climate, and postsecondary and workforce success, as well as family strengths that are related to positive outcomes. We evaluate education initiatives and help local and state education leaders use data to drive decision-making.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform literature reviews on education and related topics, synthesizing information from a broad array of scholarly sources.
  • Support ongoing data collections including tracking participation, scheduling, and managing communications with participants.
  • Administer structured and semi-structured surveys (telephone, written, and in-person interviews) for projects requiring primary data collection.
  • Write code to manage and analyze data in SAS/STATA/R or similar statistical software.
  • Tabulate data and produce effective graphs.
  • Write substantive reports, briefs, and journal articles.
  • Prepare presentations for conferences and meetings.
  • Assist with organizing meetings, preparing meeting notes, and filing when necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, economics, sociology, demography, education or related social science field.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and analyze data using SAS/STATA/R or other statistical software packages.
  • Coursework covering statistics and research methods.
  • Direct experience with primary or secondary quantitative research.
  • Ability to write clearly and present complex information to technical and general audiences.
  • Strong analysis, critical thinking, and programming skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (particularly Excel).
  • Experience with data collection (e.g., surveys or cognitive labs) is desirable, but not required.
  • Familiarity with current U.S. education policy priorities, such as school climate and safety, Common Core State Standards, or Highly Qualified Teachers, is desirable, but not required.
  • Experience working in or with schools is desirable, but not required.
