PDK is an umbrella organization that also includes Pi Lambda Theta (PLT) and Educators Rising. Together, these three associations support the full spectrum of the education profession, beginning with Educators Rising for aspiring educators, continuing with PLT a collegiate honor society for preservice teachers, and concluding with PDK, serving the professional needs of career educators.
PDK is in an exciting state of transition. The organization is leveraging its primary assets – Phi Delta Kappan magazine, the PDK/Gallup poll, and Educators Rising – to position itself as a provocative yet neutral arbiter of the public dialogue, bringing key education issues to the forefront and promoting constructive cross-sector discourse that leads to alignment and action. The organization aims to provoke rich and constructive conversations among diverse stakeholders, including educators, policymakers, parents, students, and taxpayers, thus elevating its brand and impact in the field.
Job Summary:
Reporting directly to the CEO, and serving as an integral member of the senior management team, the Director of Communications and Brand Management will be responsible for the development of PDK International's communication strategy and will contribute to PDK's organizational strategic planning process.
The Director of Communications and Brand Management will develop a communications plan that allows PDK to achieve its new vision of serving as the go-to resource for unbiased education information and a neutral arbiter of public dialogue on education. The communications plan will also promote, enhance, and protect PDK's brand reputation, which includes creating consistency and connection among Phi Delta Kappan magazine, PDK/Gallup poll, Pi Lambda Theta, and Educators Rising, and increasing awareness of these organizational assets.
The Director of Communications and Brand Management will be responsible for the development, integration, and implementation of a broad range of public relations activities relative to the strategic direction and positioning of the organization and its leadership. This individual will be an ambassador for the organization and will need to build relationships with the media. The goal is to advance the organization's position with relevant constituents, as well as to drive broader awareness and donor support for the organization,
The Director of Communications and Brand Management will be responsible for PDK International's varied and integrated communications products and services including: media and public relations; organization websites, social media, e-newsletters and other online communications; print materials; and marketing.
Essential Job Functions:
Communications Strategy, Vision, and Leadership
- Develop and implement an integrated, organization-wide strategic communications plan to broaden awareness of the education sector and strengthen PDK's brand identity across key stakeholder audiences
- Create a brand/marketing/public relations strategy that will allow PDK leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including the media, public officials, and key influencers
- Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the education sector and organization. Work with the board and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies.
Communications Operations
- Lead the continued development and use of the PDK brand, which includes Phi Delta Kappan magazine, the PDK/Gallup Poll, Pi Lambda Theta, and Educators Rising. Determine a strategy to create consistency and connection among brands.
- Oversee, or execute as needed, all copy (in print and online) intended for public consumption to ensure its alignment with the strategic communications plan
- Curate content and increase audience engagement on PDK's social media channels
- Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations and other supporting material as needed
- Serve as lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization and actively cultivate and manage press relationships to ensure coverage of issues of strategic importance to the sector, as well as PDK's programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects
- Manage relationships with any communications-related vendors or consultants
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree required
- 7+ years experience in a communications role preferred
- Demonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with top tier reporters and editors, and in successfully positioning subject matter with the media to achieve high-impact placements
- Extensive successful writing and editing experience (externally focused) with a variety of print and online communications media
- Demonstrated experience and leadership in managing a comprehensive strategic communications, media relations, and marketing program to advance an organization's mission and goals
- Creative and thoughtful on how new media technologies can be utilized
- Innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and output
- Self-reliant, good problem solver, results oriented
- Energetic, flexible, collaborative, and proactive; a team leader
- Experience with WordPress and/or HTML preferred
