Position Overview

The Office of Communications is responsible for advancing the image of DCPS through strategic communications that showcase the school district's value and impact to all stakeholders (teachers, families, Central Office staff, government officials, nonprofit and corporate partners, and the general public). Our core areas of work are: (1) media relations, (2) digital communications, (3) marketing and brand management (4) internal communications, and (5) crisis communications. All of our work is designed to impact and improve student achievement at the individual student, school or district level.

 

The Specialist, Visual and Digital Communications is responsible for overseeing, implementing, and expanding visual and digital means of promoting initiatives at District of Columbia Public Schools, including graphic design, photography, and video production. The Specialist will create innovative and creative media content for high-profile projects and initiatives and develop digital engagement strategies to showcase the DCPS brand locally and nationally. The Specialist, will work closely with other members of the Communications team as well as with the Office of Family and Public Engagement to implement strategies that engage family and community stakeholders.

The Specialist, Visual and Digital Communications will report to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The below statements are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties, and/or skills required. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Creates engaging digital media content, including original graphics and videos, for key DCPS stakeholders (parents, students, community members, partners).
  • Helps to manage DCPS social media presence (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and other emerging social media platforms), including monitoring, updating and responding to all content in a timely manner.
  • Devises systems and mechanisms for tracking social media use by key stakeholders (parents, students, community members, partners), and then interprets results for the Communications Team and helps develop strategies for maintaining and expanding DCPS social media presence.
  • Helps to manage the DCPS website, with support from the Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OTCO).
  • Supports content management for newsletters, including editorial/distribution schedule, and back end support.
  • Monitors high-profile DCPS projects and initiatives, as well as local and national education trends that have potential influence or impact on the organization's digital presence.
  • Manages, maintains and evaluates system to text and call DCPS families on important issues (currently Blackboard) and email system as primary channels for communicating with DCPS parents.
  • Serves as member of the Crisis Communications Team.
  • Builds relationships and liaises with internal divisions, DCPS vendors and external stakeholders to drive collaboration and project success, including responding to urgent requests from multiple internal and external DCPS stakeholders.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and three to five years of related work experience.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Previous exposure to or experience in the education sector a plus.
  • Significant experience in video editing, photography and photo editing, and graphic design, including knowledge of Photoshop, Adobe InDesign and other relevant software.
  • Strong digital knowledge including web, mobile and social media.
  • Expert knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and other emerging social media platforms.
  • Expert knowledge of social media management tools, such as Tweetdeck, HootSuite, Sprout Social, and Attentive.Ly.
  • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of basic HTML and CSS. Experience with Drupal is a plus.
  • Strong presentation skills with proven ability to communicate complex and technical concepts to broad based stakeholder audience.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work quickly under tight deadlines.
