Schedule: Part-Time, Seasonal, 15-20 hours per week with occasional
weekends

Salary: $15 per hour
Supervisor: Program Director of Middle School Programs

City Kids Wilderness Project is a nonprofit outdoor education program for
under-served inner-city youth (ages 11 to 24) from the Washington, DC. We
utilize the outdoors as a personally enriching environment and as a
classroom for academic, recreational, and life skills. To learn more about

Position Overview  
The Afterschool Educator will work with two other Afterschool Educators,
the Senior Outdoor Program Coordinator, and the Program Director of Middle
School Programs to develop and implement afterschool programming,
developing curriculum and teaching independently. This will include
preparing materials for lessons and activities, as well as leading the
lessons in a manner consistent with City Kids' vision and mission.
 
We are seeking candidates with skill in middle school education, youth
development, program development and design, and who are able to lead in
the outdoors as well as in a classroom. Candidates must have a passion for
the outdoors, and the ability to share and encourage that passion in CKWP
youth. Candidates should have experience with several of the following
activities: teaching/tutoring, hiking, backpacking, camping, canoeing,
kayaking, trip planning, trip leading, and other outdoor activities. The
Afterschool Educator may also assist in building partnerships with schools
and local organizations to recruit new students for the program.
 
Afterschool Educators must be available during after school program hours:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 7:30pm and on
occasional weekends for day or overnight trips. Additional hours may be
available based on candidate interest and organizational need.
 
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Prepare and teach City Kids lessons, supervise snack and recreation time, act as a key tutor during homework completion time.
  • Assist in the creation and development of all educational materials that support on-site and trip based, hands-on learning activities.
  • Assist in research, planning, and preparation of CKWP day and overnight trips as well as the development and implementation of other educational programs as necessary.
  • Other duties as are necessary for the operation of trips and program as assigned by the Program Director and other City Kids leadership.
 
Additional Qualifications/Skills:
  • College degree from an accredited institution, or presently earning a degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience teaching, counseling, or mentoring youth; experience with at-risk youth preferred.
  • Experience leading activities related to gardening, ecology, and other topics
  • The ability to relate well to others and to work effectively with a variety of people.
  • An understanding and commitment to the goals and philosophy of City Kids and experiential education.
  • Patience, initiative, enthusiasm, proactive communication style, flexibility in variety of situations, organization and detail orientation.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of basic computer and web-based research tools.
  • Interest in photography, related software, & the use of Internet platforms to share photos.
  • Basic map reading/orienteering skills.
  • First Aid Certification and CPR, Wilderness First Aid or higher
  • preferred.
  • Valid Driver's License.
Candidates must successfully pass a background check, drug test and be
fingerprinted by the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) before they will be eligible to start working in the after school program this fall.
