Arlington Works! AmeriCorps in Arlington, Virginia seeks a team of 7 full-time AmeriCorps members for the 2013-2014 program year (Beginning on or about September 1, 2013). We are looking for team members who are passionate about serving immigrant adults, youth, and children as well as supporting the project's goals of delivering high-quality programs to develop students' English, Spanish, technology, employment, leadership, and civic skills.


SUMMARY OF SERVICE POSITIONS

 CORE SERVICE AREAS (See our website for full service descriptions http://www.arlingtonworks.org/)

Ø  ESOL INSTRUCTOR (4 positions): Teaches ESOL and citizenship classes to adults.

Ø  SPANISH & CULTURE INSTRUCTOR (1 position): Teaches Spanish and culture classes to immigrant children and youth.

Ø  EMERGING LEADERS PROGRAM (ELP) FACILITATOR (2 positions): Co-leads the ELP and engages immigrant youth, parents, mentors, and community volunteers in leadership, service, and education.

TEAM RESPONSIBILITIES: All Arlington Works! team members also work collaboratively to:

Ø  Plan and coordinate National Service Days (e.g. 9-11 Food Drive) and other service events.

Ø  Provide employment services and technology instruction, e.g. develop and conduct workshops, courses, and/or clinics; provide job search assistance; and assist with local job fairs.

Ø  Promote Arlington Works! and AmeriCorps, including social media and website updates.

Ø  Recruit participants and community volunteers for all Arlington Works! components and service activities.

Ø  Provide family strengthening services, e.g. parent/child workshops, leadership training, and family events.

Ø  Assist partner programs with student outreach, intake, testing, and registration.

Ø  Conduct service activities that enhance and expand partner programming, resources, and capacity.

Ø  Participate in meetings, training, professional development, reporting, and evaluation activities.


TRAINING AND ORIENTATION: AmeriCorps members receive intensive pre-service training as well as training throughout the year. Team training includes an orientation to AmeriCorps, the immigrant population in Arlington, and Arlington Works! programs and service expectations, including prohibited activities, as well as class observations, cross-cultural communication, working with the foreign-born population, promoting civic participation, leadership development, emergency preparedness, recruiting/supporting volunteers, and Life After AmeriCorps.  Members also receive extensive training specific to their core service area, e.g. teaching ESOL or Spanish, working with youth.    

 

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ELIGIBILITY

Ø  Available full-time (1700 hours; ca. 36 hours/week) from on or about September 1, 2013 to on or about August 15, 2014

Ø  Able to serve a flexible schedule, including evenings and most Saturdays

Ø  U.S. Citizen or permanent resident alien

Ø  Bachelor's degree

Ø  Strong interest in the immigrant community, teaching, leadership development, and service

Ø  Excellent English communication and interpersonal skills

Ø  Spanish fluency required for some positions

Ø  Some experience teaching and working with the foreign-born (desirable)

Ø  Comfortable with Microsoft applications, social media networking, and web development

Ø  Access to a car is helpful since service activities are conducted throughout Arlington
