Maya Angelou Public Charter Schools (MAPCS) in Washington, D.C. is seeking a Job Club Coordinator to fill a vacancy for the 2013-2014 school year.
The Job Club Coordinator is responsible for leading the Job Club component while working in conjunction with the other Component Leaders. Some students may have identified special education needs. Other students may be behind academically and need creative and careful instruction. This is a part-time position and would be a good fit for someone who is currently running their own business.
Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
- Teach curriculum approved by CAS
- Conduct weekly structured learning experiences about the world of work and careers
- Teach basic work-related skills and principles behind banking and savings
- Organize and conduct group business activities that will expose participants to elements of entrepreneurship, small business ownership and earning potential
- Arrange for visits to job fairs, industry visits and other such activities which will expose young people to concrete employment opportunities
- Ensure that all participants in the program have an open and active bank account and schedule monthly bank trips
- Work with others at the agency to establish an account at a local savings institution to manage money generated through various business projects and have regularly scheduled bank account reviews
- Work on job development for placement of all teens during the summer in full time or part time employment or stipend activities. Internships, job shadowing, entrepreneurial activities and community service are all appropriate placements
- Use the Carrera Management Information System to keep accurate monthly records of job club attendance, entrepreneurial activities, bank account program and stipends for each participant
- Provide for ongoing monitoring and supervision of summer work placements. Record all leads, opportunities, and partners on the Carrera Management Information system
- Keep precise records of entrepreneurial expenses, profits, deposits and withdrawals using the budget features of the Carrera Management Information system
- Use the Carrera Management Information System to develop and record a monthly calendar of all activities and events that include upcoming entrepreneurial projects, bank trips and special activities
- Collaborate with other component staff on opportunities that reinforce learning associated with the employment component
- Meet with program coordinator for weekly supervision and attend program staff meetings
- Attend monthly meetings offered at the NTC
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- College graduate
- Experienced Entrepreneur
- Experience teaching youth from diverse backgrounds
In addition, candidates should possess an unyielding belief that with the appropriate supports, coupled with high expectations, all students can significantly improve their academic skills, and can develop pro-social and culturally normative behaviors that will enable them to succeed at school and beyond. Candidates should also believe that all students have strengths and talents and that good teachers help students find them and use them to address weaknesses or overcome fears.
Salary and Benefits
