Bi-lingual Spanish Academic College Advisor, College Access Program
Full time Positions Available
I. DESCRIPTION
The Bi-lingual Spanish Academic Advisor supports the educational planning and administration of the College Access Program. The College Access Program aims to prepare socio-economically disadvantaged youth, primarily of immigrant families, to complete high school and apply for enroll in college. The Academic Advisor participates in the planning, development, implementation and delivery of project program services, including program curricula and student education plans, academic support and teacher coordination. He/she serves as a liaison between teacher and schools, and helps recruit program participants. Academic Advisors work Tuesday–Saturday during the academic year and Monday–Friday during the summer.
II. RESPONSIBILITIES
· Program position is based out of the LAYC headquarters, but program is implemented at Roosevelt High School.
· Conduct individual weekly advising meetings with students and implement goals and objectives in an individual academic plan
· Monitor students' academic progress; analyze progress reports from instructors; determine eligibility and satisfactory progress toward diploma; identify current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g. study skills, tutoring) and refer students to appropriate resources for assistance; and communicate findings to team
· Design bilingual (Spanish) workshops and seminars for students, parents, and school staff on college access, enrollment, and financial aid materials
· Assist families in understanding and completing college applications and financial aid documents
· Design and present workshops in Spanish to prospective participants, families, and community organizations
· Monitor academic progress and status of students via school visits; work closely with school staff to ensure academic goals are met
· Record participant demographic and performance data and enter this data into LAYC's outcomes system, Efforts-to-Outcomes
· Assist in summer, spring break and academic year program activities.
· Supervise educational and recreational trips
III. QUALIFICATIONS
· Bachelor's degree in education or counseling (Masters preferred)
· Minimum of two years experience in the field of education
· Knowledgeable about college entrance and financial aid application processes
· Familiarity with college access programs or related experience working with disadvantage populations is desired. Note: Highest consideration will be given to applicants who have succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those faced by low-income and first generation participants.
