GENERAL SUMMARY

Students for Education Reform (SFER) is a student movement that champions educational equity for all children, regardless of race or background. SFER organizes students to be a powerful force for K-12 education policy and political change, through campus chapters that work at the national, state, and local levels to advocate for great teachers and quality school choices for all kids.

State Program Directors work directly with student organizers (chapter leaders), recruiting a network of local SFER chapters, providing training and coaching on organizing skills to chapter leaders, and developing a student-led strategy for policy and political change. Program Directors must be able to build a diverse, thriving membership base; build relationships with legislators and community leaders; build the capacity of the local SFER membership base to take action; and, most importantly, organize students to take action to end educational inequity through public actions, grassroots lobbying, and media action.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recruit a diverse coalition of 10-15 local undergraduates to organize on their campuses and in their communities
  • Empower students to plan and executive grassroots organizing and lobbying activities, including rallies, lobby days, legislator meetings, letter writing campaigns, and earned media pushes
  • Develop state-level student organizing and policy advocacy strategy in conjunction with student leaders; build coalitions with partner policy advocacy groups
  • Provide on-the-ground organizing training and coaching to student leaders
  • Build and manage relationships with a diverse group of state stakeholders including local education advocacy groups, education non-profits, universities, media outlets, legislators, and community organizations


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Passion and talent for community organizing and social justice work; outstanding relationship-building skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively across lines of difference
  • Ability to work autonomously as part of an entrepreneurial team
  • Ability to think strategically and develop a politically savvy issue-based advocacy strategy
  • Deep knowledge of and/or personal experience in the local public schools
  • 1-2+ years grassroots organizing or campaign experience strongly preferred

Salary for this position is competitive and depends on prior experience. A comprehensive benefits package is included.
