[YEP-DC] Volunteer: Read to homeless kids once a month

The Reading Connection is excited to announce a new partnership with the National Center for Children and Families to launch a Read-Aloud program at the Greentree Shelter in Bethesda, MD. The Read-Aloud program's goal is to share the joy and excitement of books with children living in homeless shelters and affordable apartment complexes. Volunteers bring books to life during one-hour Read-Alouds that engage children in books and hands-on activities based on a theme.

The Read-Aloud program at Greentree will be held on Tuesdays from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. beginning in late August, 2014 and continuing throughout the year.  Volunteers work in teams to plan and implement their Read-Alouds which are held according to a set schedule.

Read-Aloud volunteers must attend an orientation session, clear a background check and commit to reading one Tuesday a month on a set schedule for a minimum of one year.  All volunteers must be 18 years of age.  Orientations will be held on Saturday, July 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and on Wednesday, August 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Volunteer Training Center at the National Center for Children and Families (NCCF) Headquarters.  Food is served at all orientation sessions.

For more information or to sign up as a volunteer, visit our website at www.thereadingconnection.org and complete a Read-Aloud volunteer application.  Also, please take a moment to read some more information about the program including a volunteer position description found here: http://bit.ly/1905dQ9.

The Read-Aloud Program serves children in SE DC, Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax County, and Bethesda, MD.  There are openings many of our locations as well as openings throughout the year.  Please contact Stephanie Berman at sberman@thereadingconnection.org for more information.
