EdFuel's Leadership Labs is a two-day professional development experience designed specifically for DC education professionals this summer. In addition to learning key functional skills from industry experts, it is a networking opportunity to meet top DC senior ed leaders.
Please sign up at bit.ly/edfuellabs to indicate your interest in receiving a YEP-DC member discount. Sign up by 7/18 (this Friday!), and you will hear back on 7/21 whether a spot is available and at what discount rate.*
*Amount of group discount is dependent on how many YEP-DC members sign up.
Please note that you may not combine group discounts available through multiple organizations. However, you may wish to ask your employer to sponsor you to attend the EdFuel Leadership Labs.
Tips for Asking Your Employer to Sponsor Your Professional Development
Professional development is a great way to scale your impact and make a long-term investment in your career in education. Organizations are often willing to support their employees in this endeavor.
Here are some tips on how to ask your employer to sponsor a professional development opportunity:
1. Do your research. Be ready to articulate the following:
o What the opportunity is
o What exactly you'll learn, and how it contributes to your work
o Cost (both in terms your time and the actual dollar amount)
o Ask questions, if you anticipate additional information your manager will ask. (For Leadership Labs, email in...@edfuel.org with any questions)
o Think through your Plan B (e.g. If your manager says no to sponsoring you for the full cost, would they cover part of the cost?)
2. Practice with a peer
o Do a quick run through your talking points with a peer
o Demonstrate all the research you've conducted (helps to show you've thought through your request)
o Be sure to strike the right tone, express humility
o *Keep your pitch short*
3. Ask your manager in person
o Find a moment your manager is alone and undistracted
o Be gracious no matter what your manager decides; this opens the door for future conversations about PD
Good luck!--
