Few people may argue with the fact that the teaching profession needs more prestige. But more people might debate how to attract that prestige. Amanda Ripley, author of Smartest Kids in the World, recently pushed education schools to get tougher on their entrance standards and graduation requirements, in an effort to bring more respect to the profession. But Recess blogger Matt Richmond says that's backwards: You don't make an already-unattractive job harder to attain; you turn that unattractive job into one that highly qualified candidates want.
