[YEP-DC] Job Posting: Summer Internship at the DC State Board of Education

Hello,

We are looking for Policy Fellows and Communications Fellows to work with us at the DC State Board of Education over the summer.  Here are the two job descriptions that I would like posted on the listserv:

 

The DC State Board of Education seeks Policy Fellows.
 
The DC State Board of Education (State Board) was established on June 12, 2007 and consists of nine elected members and is responsible for advising the State Superintendent of Education on educational matters, including state standards; state policies, including those governing special, academic, vocational, charter and other schools; state objectives; and state regulations proposed by the Mayor or the State Superintendent of Education. The State Board has approval responsibility of many important educational issues as well. Excitingly, the State Board is seeking to expand its capacity to deliver policy recommendations for the entire District of Columbia.
 
If you are you interested in policy, love figuring out how things work and how to make them better, and want to help improve the educational outcomes of children, then you may be the ideal person to join the State Board’s Fellowship team.
 
We are in search of extremely organized and passionate fellows to help us engage the community in discussions of education. During the summer, fellows are expected to contribute 20-25 hours/week of their time.  Exact days and times will be determined in conjunction with the fellows’ manager.
 
Policy Fellows will work closely with State Board staff and members to:

 

  • Conduct policy research, develop policy fact sheets, track policy and legislative changes, and attend community meetings;
  • Provide staff with support in research and analysis of various topics, organizations, and key players in the field;
  • Assist in the development of case studies of promising practices in education;
  • Attend conferences, briefings, and forums as a representative of the State Board;
  • Assist in the preparation of State Board publications and events;
  • Keep staff abreast of trends in education reform;
  • Compose and coordinate blog articles about education issues; and
  • Provide any other support to the Board member and staff as needed.

 
Qualifications for our ideal fellows:

·         Must be interested in education or youth-related policy. Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply.

·         Outstanding research, organization, and writing skills.

·         Excellent oral communication.

·         Strategically organized.

·         Impeccable writing/grammar skills.

·         Internet and computer savvy.

·         Ability to listen and propose ideas (you are part of a team and we want to hear your thoughts).

·         Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Applications.
 

Compensation: Undergraduate students receive a stipend of $1,500; graduate students receive a stipend of $2,000.
 
Deadline: Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
 
Timeframe: approx. May 19, 2014 – approx. August 15, 2014 (unless otherwise discussed)

If you are you interested in wanting to help improve the educational outcomes of children, and are interested in expanding your skills in messaging about policies, community meetings, and developing outreach strategies, among other duties, then you may be the ideal person to join the State Board’s Fellowship team.
 
We are in search of extremely organized and passionate fellow to help us engage the community in discussions of education. During the summer, fellows are expected to contribute 20-25 hours/week of their time.  Exact days and times will be determined in conjunction with the fellows’ manager.

Responsibilities include:

 

·         Draft and edit a wide variety of written content, including e-action alerts, fact sheets, news/press releases, blog posts, web page text, etc.;

·         Quickly learn about the issues on which we work as well as the range of communications tactics we employ;

·         Produce content for Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites;

·         Assist in the development and implementation of digital marketing plans for all online communications, including social media and e-newsletters; and

·         Copy-edit/proof articles and create compelling titles and summaries.

 

The Communications Fellow will have the following skills:

 

  • Web and social media savvy, with a keen awareness of the latest/emerging digital tools, platforms, etc.
  • Interested in tech, media, content creation, and digital communications
  • Outgoing, detail-oriented, and extremely organized
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Applications, and social media .
