[YEP-DC] Job Posting: Post-Secondary Success Coordinating at Maya Angelou Charter Schools

About the Young Adult Learning Center (YALC)

The YALC provides academic and workforce development to older youth/young adults (ages 17-24) who do not have a high school credential, and particularly those transitioning from incarceration.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Post- Secondary Success Coordinator will:
  • Create a framework and conduct an analysis of local post-secondary institutions to determine high potential placements for YALC graduates (places with strong student supports, solid alumni network etc.) 
  • Develop and maintain a user- friendly handbook of post-secondary institutions that is targeted to YALC graduates (clearly outlines programs offered, qualifications necessary and a point of contact)
  • Provide tiered one-on-one support to students interested in enrolling, re-enrolling or transferring to a post-secondary institution
  • Coordinate delivery of workshops, presentations and seminars on post-secondary success in academic and vocational classrooms
  • Develops and maintains  systems and processes to track individualized post-secondary goal-setting, steps and outcomes , including time frames, through the individualized career planning process,
  • Conduct exit and follow-up interviews with all students 
  • Work with local partners such as the Educational Opportunities Center and DC CAP to increase opportunities for YALC students to gain post-secondary exposure
  • Organize college and university trips and ensure student participation at post-secondary events around the Washington DC metro area
  • Maintain regular contact with recent alumni via phone, e-mail, and in-person meetings
  • Refer students and families to post-secondary and community-based resources
  • Serve as an advocate for alumni and liaison between alumni and higher education personnel
  • Partner with work-readiness counselor to develop promising career opportunities for graduates
  • Take a leadership role in planning and coordinating a student- centered commencement

 

Qualifications:

Ideal candidates will have at least three years of experience in urban youth development and direct services with a special emphasis on college readiness.  Preference will be given to candidates with tremendous work ethic and a Bachelor's degree in social work or psychology. In addition, candidates should possess an unyielding belief that with the appropriate supports, coupled with high expectations, all students can significantly improve their academic skills, and can develop pro-social and culturally normative behaviors that will enable them to succeed in high school, college and beyond. 
 

All potential candidates should have:

  • Case management and direct service proficiency and familiarity with social work notation
  • Strong database maintenance skills to handle confidential material
  • Excellent inter-personal and written communication, organizational and time-management skills, with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Event planning and program management experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of post-secondary readiness, access, and advising
  • Active driver's license and ability/desire to travel regionally
  • Desired computer skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite applications, internet and social media applications.
Additionally, ideal candidates must embrace a school culture that requires all staff to work beyond the traditional school hours in order to create an environment filled with hope and high expectations, where students will radically improve their academic, employment, and social skills.
