[dcab-l] Stephen Wade at our Gig

Bluegrassers:

Rattlesnake Hill played the Sunday afternoon show at New Deal CafĂ© in Greenbelt, Md. on Sept 22nd.  “Wild Bill”, in the audience, left a foursome into the side door to catch a little of our set.

No sooner did they enter, than our banjo picker John Brunschwyler exclaimed: “Stephen Wade!”

(As a quick explanation, Stephen Wade, for many years, had the longest running show in Washington DC (!), called “Banjo Dancer”.)

While they listened, we did “Lay Down My Old Guitar”; I mimicked some quick snatches of his Banjo Dancer show, which I had seen several times, and I also gave him a copy of our CD:  “Ride Out the Storm”.  Then, they continued their journey.  What a treat to have him suddenly appear at a gig!

Anyway, a few days later, I received this mail from him, and I thought to share:

Dear Ed,

Thank you for that totally generous and unexpected gift of your CD. I can't wait to hear it. It was so clear just from watching a bit of your sound check yesterday and your performance of that Delmore Brothers song you did on stage yesterday that whatever you do is just wonderful. I think your banjo player is just totally terrific too. Really wonderful. Please let him know.

The fact that you have Jack Sanbower on your album, too, only adds to its inherent power.

I have to drive to Texas this coming weekend, and so, believe me, I'll get a good long chance to absorb and enjoy this recording.

My stage work lately surrounds this book: (there's a brief video there, if you've a little less than five minutes):

http://www.press.uillinois.edu/books/catalog/55qpr7zm9780252036880.html

(one of the book's chapters, by the way, explores "Jerusalem Ridge," your track 14.)

This current article here, too, will update you on my stuff:

http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Making-a-difference/2013/0920/Stephen-Wade-uncovers-The-Beautiful-Music-All-Around-Us

Do stay in touch and again, thank you for your kindness and bravo for your music.

Stephen

It was such a surprise to receive this email from Stephen Wade, I thought you might

enjoy it, and even check out Stephen’s book and article.

[YEP-DC] Only One More Week: Education Innovation Fellowship Applications due by 11:59 pm Monday, 10/7

CityBridge Foundation and NewSchools Venture Fund launched the Education Innovation Fellowship program in 2013 with an inaugural cohort of 12 Fellows. This year-long program introduces teacher leaders to the most promising innovations in blended learning and offers them opportunities to pilot blended models in their schools. With the support of a $1 million grant from the Microsoft Corporation, the Fellowship will expand in 2014 and 2015, launching classroom and school-wide innovation in dozens of Washington, D.C. schools. The Fellowship is a strategic investment in great teachers—the classroom leaders who can become natural change agents for their schools, using digital content and tools to drive instructional innovation.

In November of 2013, we will select 16 to 20 new Fellows from a pool of qualified applicants currently teaching in District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) and D.C. public charter schools. The Fellowship program will run from January through December 2014. It will include local and national school visits, workshops, seminars, guest speakers, and technology demonstrations. Fellows will design and lead their blended learning pilot programs in summer school and expand them in their classrooms and schools in the 2014-2015 school year.

[BloomingdaleActionList] DDOT Livability Study

I've scanned the DDOT handout from Thursday evening's SAP Open House. There are  a lot of interesting proposals in here - including mini-roundabouts and various Low Impact Designs for stormwater management.

This (and more) should be posted online by the end of the week. Residents need to comment and let DDOT know what is important to the neighborhood.

I gave Scott my handout for Planning's draft for the SAP - he will scan and post. We were looking at it today and there is a lot of "fine print" to read - it will need a lot of scrutiny. I will scan the summary sheets and email separately.

[YEP-DC] Job Opp: Youth Poetry & Empowerment Coach

Youth Poetry & Empowerment Coach

Job Description

Background

Split This Rock calls poets to the center of public life and fosters a national network of socially engaged poets. From our home in the nation's capital we celebrate poetic diversity and the transformative power of the imagination. We are committed to fostering the voices of the next generation poets through our youth programs.

Split This Rock's robust youth programs use poetry to teach and empower teens from the DC metropolitan area to speak up about issues of social justice. We are currently based in 20 high schools throughout the DC metro area, creating and facilitating poetry clubs. Our youth programs operate year-round to offer exceptional learning, writing, bonding, and performance opportunities to young people interested in the power of language. Our primary youth programming includes the DC Youth Slam Team, Louder Than A Bomb – DMV (LTAB-DMV), and The World & Me Poetry Contest. Our teaching artists and teens also host monthly open mics and poetry slams, and  frequently lead workshops, teach classes, and perform for schools, community groups, NGOs, and social justice demonstrations.

Position Description

Our Youth Poetry & Empowerment Coaches support and cultivate middle and high school students' love for creative writing, poetry, and spoken word performance. Through our in-school and after-school programs, we seek to popularize poetry, establish and maintain poetry clubs and slam teams in schools, and help students develop their writing and performance skills as well as a culture of literacy, camaraderie, and truth-telling. Our goal is for every high school to have and support a poetry slam team that represents the school at regional competitions just as they do with basketball and football teams. Our top-notch coaches and mentors are critical in achieving these goals.

Each year our high school poetry clubs work together in preparation for the regional LTAB-DMV Teen Poetry Slam Festival, bringing together over 20 high school slam teams for a weekend of sharing, listening, and connecting with other young poets. The Youth Poetry & Empowerment Coach will run one or two high school poetry clubs, working with the students to form a team of 4-6 poets for competition in LTAB-DMV. Running the club involves scheduling and facilitating meetings, recruiting students and organizing slams, showing and teaching students high quality poetry performance techniques, and helping the team craft individual and group poems. Maintaining communication with the faculty sponsor of the club and Split This Rock staff is also an important component of the Coach's job. In short, the Coach is responsible for ensuring a successful and continuing poetry program at their assigned school.

This is a part-time, contract position.

Key Responsibilities

The Youth Poetry & Empowerment Coach will be responsible for:

·         Maintaining an amicable and effective working relationship with school staff, and students

·         Recruiting, organizing, inspiring, mentoring, and coaching students

·         Leading and facilitating high school slam teams

·         Ensuring teams are adequately prepared for LTAB-DMV with multiple new poems written, revised, rehearsed and memorized before April

·         Meeting once per month for mandatory professional development sessions with other Split This Rock coaches and teaching artists

Schedule

Youth Poetry & Empowerment Coaches work from October through May.

October – January: Coaches meet with their poetry clubs at least twice per month or at most, weekly visits, and attend monthly professional development sessions.

February – May: Coaches meet with their poetry clubs weekly and bi-weekly, and attend monthly professional development sessions.

As Coaches bond with their students and poetry clubs, they may wish to volunteer their time and visit the club at additional times. While this is highly encouraged, Coaches must communicate with supervisors prior to all meetings with students.

Payment

$25/hour (with max of 1.5 hours per poetry club meeting)

Split This Rock cannot pay for more than one weekly meeting until February. From February through May (in preparation for LTAB), coaches will be paid for twice weekly sessions with their youth poetry clubs.

Qualifications

You must have:

·         At least 2 years of demonstrated experience working directly and effectively with youth (preferably teens)

·         High school diploma, or equivalent, (Bachelors degree preferred)

·         Passion for social justice and youth empowerment

·         Interest in, and some familiarity with, spoken word poetry (YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A POET)

·         Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills

·         Clean TB test and background check for working with students (can be completed after interview)

To Apply

Email a thoughtful cover letter outlining your interest in this position, your current resume, and 3 references to Tucker@SplitThisRock.org

[YEP-DC] Higher ed job available in Nairobi, Kenya

Hi all,

My friend is launching a social enterprise called Spire to create a new model for higher education and education-to-employment training in the developing world. They are building programs to close the skills gap between what employers seek and what higher education institutions deliver -- and in doing so, transform the lives of tens of thousands of promising young people.

They're now looking to hire an outstanding Director of Program Design to build Spire's bridge program, a one-year experience to help students transition from university into their first full-time job. The bridge program will launch in Kenya in 2014. The Director will be the founding architect of a model built to answer one question: if we reinvented the ideal education-to-employment transition for the 21st century, what would it look like? Success in this role could change the way people think about higher education and job training around the globe.

The Director of Program Design will be based in Nairobi, Kenya. The job description is accessible herehttp://goo.gl/L7M62t

If you want a chance to change the world while living a great lifestyle, earning attractive compensation, and working with a dynamic founding team in a city with tremendous entrepreneurial buzz, they would love to talk to you.

Just wanted to share!

Cheers,

Jackie Bello
Director of Student Services
American Honors
