Senior Director, State Advocacy and Support

The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools (NAPCS) is a national nonprofit organization committed to advancing the charter school movement. Its mission is to lead public education to unprecedented levels of high academic achievement for all students through the fostering of a strong charter sector.

 

Position Description

Reporting to the Senior Vice President for State Advocacy and Support, the Senior Director of State Advocacy plays a leadership role in working with national and state partners to advance NAPCS's state policy advocacy goal of ensuring that every state has strong charter laws.

 

Primary Responsibilities  

  • Help design, implement, and lead state advocacy campaigns in partnership with national and state advocates in target states
  • Shape legislative language in states so it closely mirrors NAPCS's Model Law ranking of state charter school laws 
  • Help design and implement grassroots and grass tops advocacy strategies in target states
  • Educate policy makers about public charter schools and testify before legislative committees
  • Follow ballot box or legislative victories with support to ensure quality implementation of laws and the development of charter support organizations (CSOs) in target states
  • Work with legislative committee staff and governors' offices to positively impact public charter school legislation in target states
  • Gather, organize, and analyze state policies that affect public charter schools
  • Write periodic policy analyses related to the NAPCS's state policy advocacy goals
  • Track state legislative and rule-making activity in target states
  • Serve as a content expert on state policy advocacy for public charter schools, ensuring that the NAPCS is a leading voice in state policy discussions
  • Foster effective working relationships with national and state organizations

 

Qualifications Needed

  • A Bachelor's degree is required; a Master's degree is preferred
  • Advocacy experience at the state level, particularly working in collaboration with national and state partners
  • Knowledge of the public charter school sector
  • Strong familiarity with the state policy environments affecting public charter schools and understanding of education reform policy
  • A passion to improve educational opportunities for kids and a belief in choice and accountability as key elements of reform
  • Strong entrepreneurial abilities and the ability to be a quick learner
  • A track record of success working in dynamic, high-performing organizations, with an ability to prioritize projects, work cross-functionally, and advocate on behalf of a team internally and externally
  • Exceptional execution skills, with evidence of achieving strong results while juggling multiple projects
  • Excellent verbal, research, written, presentation, and analytical skills
  • Effective relationship building skills, with the capacity to work well with diverse stakeholders
  • The ability to thrive under pressure
  • Willingness to travel  up 50% of the week during state legislative sessions and work non-traditional hours as needed
