[YEP-DC] Young Friends of DC Scholars Happy Hour: 3/14, 5:30-7:30 pm

Young Friends of DC Scholars is a group of young—and young at heart—Washingtonians who share an interest in public education, service to our community, and the mission and vision of Scholar Academies, a nonprofit organization that operates two achievement gap-closing schools in southeast DC (more info below).  Schools in under-served areas benefit significantly from support from the larger community as they strive to help students overcome the achievement gap. We seek to motivate young professionals to celebrate and support the DC Scholars community through a variety of opportunities, such as volunteer projects, social events, policy conversations, and fundraising campaigns. We also aim to generate a broader awareness of the public education reforms happening in our own backyard.

This upcoming happy hour is an opportunity to network with like-minded young professionals, meet several DC Scholars staff members, learn more about the tremendous work of Scholar Academies and Young Friends efforts to support the summer enrichment program at DC Scholars Stanton Elementary School. Details for the event are:

When:  Thursday, March 14
Where:  Capitol City Brewing Co. (1100 New York Ave., NW; Metro Center)
Time:  5:30–7:30 pm
Cost:  None (Donations will be accepted and 100% of the proceeds will go to support the summer enrichment program  at DC Scholars Stanton.)

I hope you will join us on the 14th and I look forward to hearing from you!

Best,
Lauren

About Scholar Academies
Currently operating five schools and serving 1,900 students in Philadelphia, PA, Washington, DC, and Trenton, NJ, Scholar Academies manages a network of high-performing schools that provide traditionally under-served, urban students with a meaningful, high-quality education. It is one of the few charter management organizations committed to taking on “turnaround” opportunities that arise within under performing district or charter schools, in addition to starting new schools. Within the next five years, Scholar Academies aims to have clusters of four to five schools in each of the three regions serving 6,000 students.

About DC Scholars
DC Scholars is the Washington, DC regional cluster of Scholar Academies, a nonprofit school management organization that exists to close the achievement gap and contribute to national efforts to eradicate educational inequity and is currently made up of DC Scholars Stanton Elementary School and DC Scholars Public Charter School located in Wards 7 & 8 respectively. In 2010, Scholar Academies was selected to operate Stanton Elementary, one of the District’s lowest-performing elementary schools, through a partnership with DC Public Schools. Guided by the belief that every student can succeed when held to the highest expectations, DC Scholars Stanton Elementary has since implemented a highly-focused, progressive educational approach designed specifically to close the achievement gap for low-income students who come to school severely under prepared.

In 2012, the brand new DC Scholars Public Charter School opened its doors to over 180 students in grades preschool through three. With plans to grow to the eighth grade, DC Scholars PCS is committed—like DC Scholars Stanton Elementary—to preparing all students to succeed academically in high school and college.
