Organization
The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) is a nonpartisan, nationwide, nonprofit organization of public officials who head departments of elementary and secondary education in the states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and five U.S. extra-state jurisdictions. CCSSO provides leadership, advocacy, and technical assistance on major educational issues. CCSSO seeks member consensus on major educational issues and expresses their views to civic and professional organizations, federal agencies, Congress, and the public.
Specific Responsibilities
CCSSO is seeking a full-time Program Assistant to support the Standards, Assessment and Accountability (SAA) initiative team. The Program Assistant would be working on team projects for the Council’s early childhood and Common Core State Standards implementation areas. The Program Assistant will be responsible for administrative and logistical support for these projects as well as some programmatic functions.
The Program Assistant will report to the directors of early childhood education and Common Core State Standards implementation. This position offers growth potential for the right candidate and requires some travel.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Support meetings, conference calls, and webinars for the early childhood and Common Core programmatic areas. Duties include scheduling, inviting guests/speakers, sending reminders, drafting agendas, preparing meeting materials (such as making copies and assembling folders), coordinating logistics (such as liaison with internal meetings/travel staff and with hotel), ordering and setting up/tearing down of catering, booking meeting rooms, hosting meetings, and providing meeting follow-up.
- Process expense reimbursements for meeting participants, coordinate travel when needed, and order supplies.
- Take high-level notes during meetings, conference calls, and webinars and develop meeting summaries.
- Create, maintain, and update contacts and member databases.
- Manage the technical side of hosting webinars and virtual meetings.
- Develop descriptive reports on state initiatives in early childhood education and on issues of standards, assessment, and accountability.
- Generally anticipate needs and suggest solutions.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, manage time, implement competing priorities, and work well under pressure and meet deadlines
- Excellent organizational skills
- Professional verbal and written communication skills with staff, members, and outside contacts at all levels
- Exceptionally detail-oriented. Excellent writing and proofreading skills
- Comfortable learning and using new technology hardware and software
- Customer-service orientation
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in public policy, education or related field preferable, but not required
- Interest in working with K-12 educational issues and foundational knowledge of education issues
- Expert user of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
- Experience using social networking and other collaboration technologies to support distributed work teams preferable
