The Mission of Cesar Chavez Public Charter Schools for Public Policy (Chavez) is to challenge students with a rigorous curriculum that fosters citizenship and prepares them to excel in life. The school will use public policy themes to guide instruction and will provide students direct experience with organizations working in the public interest.
Position Summary
The Director of Finance is responsible for all financial matters of Chavez and its campus organizations. The Director will report to and work closely with the Managing Director as well as partner with senior leadership and the Board of Directors to develop and implement financial controls and strategies across the organization. The Director must be able to adapt to an evolving, autonomous and deadline-oriented environment.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Daily Financial Operations
· Manage accounting and finance functions including payables, receivables, payroll, bank reconciliations, and annual audit
· Develop and implement budget planning and reporting processes
· Develop reliable cash flow projection process and reporting mechanism; ensure cash to meet operating needs
· Develop and maintain internal control safeguards and coordinate audit activities
· Select, evaluate and manage financial service providers
Financial Strategy
· Provide senior level financial and risk management perspectives
· Assess organizational performance against annual budget and long-term objectives
· Ensure long-term budgetary planning and costs management align with strategic plan
· Partner with leadership on resource allocation decisions
Risk Management and Compliance
· Ensure financial operations are of the highest ethical and professional standards
· Audit and assess all financial liabilities
· Advise leadership of field activities determined to fall outside of approved practices and policies
· Ensure adequate business insurance
· Provide reports as needed or required to external stakeholders on system finances
Minimum Qualifications
The Director of Finance will be a seasoned professional with a minimum of 7 years of experience in a senior financial management role. S/he will have demonstrated experience implementing financial policy and gathering and evaluating financial information and making actionable recommendations to senior leadership. Additionally, the Director of Finance will have the following experience and attributes:
- CPA and/or MBA
- Knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including sophisticated fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting
- Experience managing financial audits, including OMB Circular A133 requirements
- Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, and organizational skills
- Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Collaborative and flexible style, with a strong service mentality
