Certified Reading Specialist
HungryBrains!™ is an NHT/Enterprise initiative designed to close the achievement gap in our affordable housing communities. HungryBrains!™ works to close the achievement gap through parental engagement, tutoring, and through enrichment activities focused on science, technology, engineering, and math. HungryBrains!™ not only helps us close the achievement gap, but also helps us bridge the digital divide and help families achieve economic stability through extended programming such as financial literacy. Each program takes place onsite where our residents live. NHT/Enterprise is currently providing tutoring support for more than 75 youth in Wards 1, 2, and 8 in Washington, DC. Youth participating in HungryBrains!™ receive up to 20 hours a week in tutoring support during the school year and up to 30 hours a week in support during the summer. NHT/Enterprise is looking for an experienced certified reading instructor to provide support to children from ESL homes.
Reading Specialist Duties:
- Conduct pre/post testing assessments to determine student reading levels.
- Create reading plans to match student ability and learning styles.
- Guide children in grades 1-8 through reading and writing activities to help them overcome obstacles to literacy.
- Consult with parents and tutors to recommend at-home strategies to improve reading skills.
- Work with tutoring coordinators to focus on struggling readers and to include materials on literacy education
- Coordinate family literacy events and programs
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in reading/literacy.
- Licensed to teach in Virginia, Maryland, and or Washington, DC.
- Two – three years of classroom experience with a low-income population.
- Demonstrated experience performing and conducting reading assessments.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills required.
- Strong software and technology skills desired.
- Experience with family literacy preferred.
- Reliable transportation a must.
- Must pass a background check.
NEED:
Reading specialist is needed at our Meridian Manor Apartment community in Ward 1.
- Spanish language skills desired.
Status/Hours/Compensation:
· This is an independent contractor position.
· $40/hour.
· Up to 8 hours per week. Starting by June 25, 2012.
· Available between 10AM-3PM in the summer.
· Available between 2:30PM-6:30PM during the 2012/2013 school year.
