Turning the Page Mission and Vision


Family Engagement is fundamental to students' success, which is why it is the cornerstone of our work. Turning the Page provides parents with access to resources and information that enable them to become more effective educators of their children at home, advocates for their children in school and leaders within their school community.


Our work is comprised of three core program areas: Families Learning Together, School Community Leadership and Linking Communities and Classrooms. As an AmeriCorps VISTA with TTP, you will be responsible for supporting these core program areas along with developing and expanding new initiatives.


Scope of Work


Core Responsibilities

The VISTA Member will be managed by a full time Partnership Coordinator- supporting partnerships and programming at eight DC Public Schools. All VISTA members will:

·         Assist with "Community Nights" programming -supporting parent recruitment and retention efforts; parent workshop delivery, child mentor programming and logistics (during parent workshops), preparation/ordering materials and other logistics-as assigned;

·         Coordinate and implement promotional classroom visits for teachers and students at respective schools;

·         Support School Community Leadership and/or parent-led initiatives throughout the school year


Projects

Families Learning Together

Community Nights are fun and interactive evenings that include parent workshops, child mentoring, book giveaways, and a family dinner. Community Nights help schools make stronger connections with their students' families and support parents as their children's most important teachers. Parents become stronger educators of their children at home and advocates for their children in school.

Community Night Workshops

·         Assist with the development of new TTP parent workshop curricula; 

·         Develop & implement parent recruitment efforts;

·         Develop & implement strategies to further engage teachers in Community Nights;

·         Ensure all school sites have workshop materials, books, and other workshop supplies;

·         Coordinate logistics of Community Night dinner;

·         Support workshop facilitation;

·         Support evaluation data collection and entry.

          Child Mentoring

·         Strengthen existing, and create new, grade-appropriate child mentoring activities;

·         Support recruitment, training, and management of volunteers and university mentors;

·         Ensure all school sites have the child mentoring materials, books and other supplies;  

          Family Summer Museum Trips

·         Identify possible family field trip locations;

·         Assist with planning and coordination of family trips;

·         Develop & implement family outreach efforts.


School Community Leadership


The School Community Leadership (Parent and Teacher) initiative goes beyond leadership trainings to provide extensive support and technical assistance to each of Turning the Page's partner school's parent-teacher organizations.

·         Support Partnership Coordinator(s) and Director of Programs with School Community Leadership training curriculum, as needed;

·         Plan and coordinate Child Mentoring activities during parent leadership training days;

·         Assist with recruitment for School Community Leadership events and initiatives.   

Communications & Development

·         Update website and edit/prepare ongoing TTP reports and evaluations;

·         Help lead TTP social networking efforts;

·         Coordinate Silent Auction efforts for Gala 2016;

·         Coordinate Gala 2016 event logistics;

·         Assist with coordination & implementation of annual Carpe Librum used book sale.
