What kinds of positions are there in the education nonprofit world versus government sector? We'll kick off Next Step by talking about the various types of education opportunities you can find in DC. A panel of leading education professionals in DC—who've worked everywhere from public schools in North Carolina to education policy think tanks—will share their background, discuss what it takes to succeed in their role, and answer questions from the audience. Panelists will include:
- Anne Hyslop, Policy Advisor at the U.S. Department of Education
- Kevin Wenzel, Blended Learning Specialist at D.C. Public Schools
- Lindsay Torrico, Director of Policy and Advocacy at United Way Worldwide
- Saumil Shah, Planning Team Lead at the D.C. Office of the State Superintendent of Education
After targeting the kind of role you'd like to pursue in the education sector, you'll learn about which skills and experiences to highlight as you start the job search. Katie McMahon, Associate Director of Recruitment at KIPP DC, will lead participants through a resume workshop, highlighting best practices based on what she's seen from the thousands of applicants she's reviewed. Austin Estes, Data Analyst at the Flamboyan Foundation, will then share some social media tips to help you leverage LinkedIn and other online professional networks as effectively as possible.
Session 3 (Monday 10/19): How Community Building Can Lead to a Successful Job Search
Session 3 (Monday 10/19): How Community Building Can Lead to a Successful Job Search
Everyone seems to talk about the importance of networking when starting the job search. But are you thinking about this activity too narrowly? Lisa Lazarus, Vice President of Regional Operations at Reading Partners, will talk about the importance of community-building and why it's important to give back to the community while also benefitting from your networks.
Session 4 (Monday 11/2): Nailing the Job Interview
Session 4 (Monday 11/2): Nailing the Job Interview
Alicia Robinson, Founder and CEO of EdPlus Consulting (and former Chief Talent Officer for DC Prep), will coach participants on how to shine in formal interviews. She'll walk us through answering tough questions such as, "What is your greatest weakness?" or "What are your salary expectations?" In addition, Alicia will explain how you should also use interviews to gauge the overall fit of your potential employer, and how to set yourself up for negotiating should you receive an offer.
