CEO, Competitive Employment Opportunity Program, is a work mentorship program for high school students receiving specialized instruction in DCPS. Mentors are the essential component of the CEO Program model. Our mentors help expose selected interns to the world of competitive employment by guiding them through career focused projects and supervising them during summer internships. CEO Program mentor/intern pairings are based on mentor expertise, as well as student interests, so mentors are always well poised to support their interns.

[YEP-DC] Volunteer Opportunity: Career Mentor at Generation Hope

Founded in 2010, Generation Hope selects teen parents in the Washington DC metro region who have displayed academic achievement and a desire to go to college to become Scholars in the Generation Hope Scholar Program. Teen parents are often dismissed by school officials and others when it comes to their potential to pursue higher education. Generation Hope presents college-readiness workshops in the community throughout the year to identify and recruit promising students to our program. Once accepted, Generation Hope provides each Scholar with support that we believe increase the likelihood that they will obtain their college degree; up to $2,400 per year in tuition assistance, one-on-one mentoring, and case management. Additionally, Scholars receive an increased network of support from the extended family that the program provides to them and to their young children. This support stays with Scholars until they earn their two or four-year degree.

Generation Hope currently serves 65 teen parents in college and more than 200 expecting or parenting high school students annually through college-readiness workshops. In July 2015, Generation Hope began a significant three-year growth plan, doubling from 33 to 65 Scholars with a goal of serving 100 parenting college students by 2018.

Please visit www.supportgenerationhope.org for more information about our unique program.

The plan will involve support from the Scholar's Sponsor moving forward, but the Career Mentor will play an instrumental role in getting the plan off the ground. After the initial meeting and development of the career plan, Career Mentors will follow up with Scholars periodically to check on progress.

Career Mentors will also be available to help Scholars edit resumes and cover letters, as well as practice interviewing and other professional skills.

Career Mentors MUST be available for Generation Hope's annual Career Clinic on Saturday, January 23, 2016 and Hope Conference on Saturday, June 25, 2016.

[dcab-l] Bluegrass in Brunswick, MD

This thursday, the day after tomorrow as I pen this message, is the first Thursday of the month. We have the stage at Beans in the Belfry Cafe in downtown Brunswick from 6:30-9 PM. Beans is located at 122 W Potomac St, right under the bridge across the Potomac. This jam is co-sponsored by Bobby Bales and myself, and has tended to draw some really good pickers over the past year. Bobby is lead guitar for Ernie Bradley and the Grassy Ridge Band, and for Cooking with Fire, and has a long history of over fifty years of picking in the DC Metroplex. If you are on Facebook you can visit our page at: https://www.facebook.com/BrunswickBluegrassJam?ref=hl to see pictures of the venue and get a feel for the event. Come do some pickin' if you can!

[YEP-DC] Program Associate, Science Position with Achieve

ABOUT ACHIEVE

Achieve is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit education reform organization dedicated to working with states to raise academic standards and graduation requirements, improve assessments, and strengthen accountability. Created in 1996 by a bipartisan group of governors and business leaders, Achieve is leading the effort to make college and career readiness a priority across the country so that students graduating from high school are academically prepared for postsecondary success. When states want to collaborate on education policy or practice, they come to Achieve. At the direction of 48 states, and partnering with the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers, Achieve helped develop the Common Core State Standards. Twenty-six states and the National Research Council asked Achieve to manage the process to write the Next Generation Science Standards. Achieve has also served as the project manager for states in the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, which are developing next generation assessments. And since 2005, Achieve has worked with state teams, governors, state education officials, postsecondary leaders and business executives to improve postsecondary preparation by aligning key policies with the demands of the real world so that all students graduate from high school with the knowledge and skills they need to fully reach their promise in college, careers and life.
