Re: [dcab-l] Re: Ralph Stanley in Maryland.

Thanks, Snowy. The venue reached out to us (DC Bluegrass Union) last week about doing some promotion for the shows. Our president was MC for Saturday night. We will certainly follow up with the owner.

Thanks for the review, Mike. It occurs to me an organizational response to the event might be a good thing. Perhaps DCBU could formally communicate its thanks on behalf of the bluegrass community. I'd go further, and suggest this be done whenever we hear about a new venue.

[dcab-l] Ralph Stanley in Maryland.

Ralph and CMB were at the Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club for 2 nights. I went Sunday, which was the 2nd night. The band sounded great. Grandson Nathan did most of the lead vocals, but Raplh sang quite a few of his hits, among them "Pretty Polly," "Little Maggie," "Oh Death," to name a few. He didn't play at all; the banjo duties were handled quite admirably by Mitchell Van Dyke.
The first set was about an hour, with a few songs by special guest Ralph II. He stayed with his Stanley roots and didn't do any of his own songs. James Alan Shelton was terrific on guitar, as was Dewey Brown on fiddle. Rounding out the band was bassist Randall Joe Hibbitts, who also sang some harmony.
About a merch break, the guys returned for their second set. They all were having fun, and they went on for another 75 minutes. I hung around for a bit afterwards, chatting with some of the people I knew. When I left, Ralph and the band were still in the lobby signing CDs and posing for photos.
All in all it was a great night of BG in DC. This was a new venue, having just opened last March. It started out life as a theater, and after being closed for years has been reincarnated as a very nice performance venue. From the web site: "It features 300 seats for dinner and 200 additional performance seats." It looked like the dinner seats were all occupied, with several dozen more folks in the second section. This area appears to be the back part of the former theater. The views of the stage were good from all areas. I think this was the first time a BG artist appeared, and I hope management was pleased with the crowd.
