You're invited to the ETS Research Forum HISPA: Inspiring Latino Students to Pursue Higher Education
HISPA embraces an innovative Role Model Program in which Latino professionals serve as positive examples for Latino youth. Role models are paired with schools and community-based educational programs, where each can share their cultural backgrounds, as well as educational and professional experiences. Since the program's start in 2008, more than 3,000 students have participated in HISPA Role Model Program sessions. A unique collaboration between HISPA and Educational Testing Service (ETS) helped to poll about 1,000 students who participated in the HISPA Role Model Program during the 2011–12 and 2012–13 school years on their interest in pursuing higher education. The students were also measured on the impact each HISPA role model had on that interest. Please join us for an ETS Research Forum where Ivonne Díaz-Claisse, CEO, President and founder of HISPA and Fred Cline, Lead Research Project Manager at ETS will present the results from the survey. The presenters will also discuss the challenges associated with measuring the program's effectiveness.
Ivonne Díaz-Claisse Ivonne Díaz-Claisse is CEO, President and founder of HISPA, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. Díaz-Claisse is also an active HISPA role model; she has shared her educational and career experiences with over 5,000 students nationwide. Under her leadership HISPA has recruited about 1,000 volunteers. HISPA has extended programs over the past three years beyond its New Jersey base to New York City and San Antonio, Texas. Díaz-Claisse holds a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Puerto Rico, a master's degree in engineering in operations research from Cornell University, a master's in mathematics from the University of Maryland and a Ph.D. in mathematics from Arizona State University. She is passionate about helping to increase the number of Hispanic students entering the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Fred Cline Fred Cline is a Lead Research Project Manager at ETS. Cline has worked for 23 years in research and development roles at ETS on more than 100 projects. His research primarily focuses on the issues of test validity and survey instruments. He also conducts research for the High Schools That Work assessment in support of its school reform program, and works on research issues for such ETS-sponsored initiatives as the HBCU Presidential Scholar program and HISPA Role Model Program. In a collaboration between ETS and the Council of Graduate Schools, Cline recently helped author two policy reports on graduate education in the United States. He is now working with research about the validity and fairness of test questions and score reports that are being developed for Common Core State Standards assessments.
