[YEP-DC] Job Postings: Maya Angelou Public Charter Schools

Science Teaching Positions for the 2013-2014 School Year: Maya Angelou Schools – Laurel, MD and Washington, DC

 
Maya Angelou Schools (MAS) and See Forever Foundation are seeking science teachers to fill vacancies for the 2013-2014 school year. We have four campuses serving students 7th grade through GED-level.

The science teachers will work as the primary teachers in chemistry, biology, and other science-related classrooms but may collaborate with co-teachers serving special education students. Some students may have identified special education needs. Other students may be behind academically and need creative and careful instruction.

Teachers at MAS are expected to support the school-wide goals of emphasizing literacy, helping students develop their critical thinking abilities, driving all students toward mastery and understanding, and helping students find their strengths and talents and use them to address weaknesses and overcome fears. There is an emphasis upon collecting and utilizing a broad range of data to drive instruction, and upon weaving social justice into instructional content and assessment.

 

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Designing and delivering curricula related to science
  • Developing and implementing unit plans and assessments
  • Assessing individual learning styles and adapting teaching methods to fit all students' needs
  • Working closely with parents and school professionals
  • Creating a classroom and school environment that features a rich diversity of resources, engages student interest, promotes student leadership and stimulates student learning
  • Having thoughtful approaches to teaching concepts and sparking student interest while also imparting essential factual knowledge
  •  Managing administrative assignments effectively and with a high level of professionalism and integrity
  • Participating in interdisciplinary team meetings for all students,
  • Modeling and contributing to a school culture of hope and high expectations for achievement, and
  • Participating in enrichment activities, e.g. retreats, outings and evening events, as required to support the educational program.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Degree in education or science
  • Eligibility for certification in science
  • Experience with at-risk youth
  • Familiarity with research-based instructional strategies

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in education or science AND certification in science
  • Teaching experience with at-risk youth
  • Highly-qualified as stipulated by No Child Left Behind in applicant's core content area

Mental Health Specialist, School Year 2013-2014: Maya Angelou Public Charter Schools, Washington, DC

Maya Angelou Public Charter Schools (MAPCS) in Washington, D.C. is seeking a Mental Health Specialist for our Carrera program to fill a vacancy for the 2013-2014 school year.

The Carrera Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program and Maya Angelou Public Charter Schools are partnering to deliver an exciting and innovative program to help youth from high-risk settings develop the desire for a productive future by avoiding pregnancy and making responsible decisions. The DC Carrera Program includes seven fundamental components: Education; Employment; Self-Expression; Lifetime Individual Sports; Family Life and Sexuality Education (FLSE); Mental Health; and Medical and Dental Care.

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Conduct confidential weekly group work counseling sessions with students using a mental health group work model
  • Provide confidential, individual counseling to students on an ongoing basis
  • Conduct outreach to, and provide counseling and educational workshops for, parents with a focus on addressing school drop-out prevention and retention
  • Be familiar with, and provide referrals to, other community-based services
  • Work closely with school administration and faculty to meet needs of the school
  • Attend regular staff and clinical supervision meetings of social workers at Children's Aid Society training center
  • Provide crisis intervention, short-term issue resolution and continued follow up once a problem has been identified
  • Collaborate with medical care provider on mental health issues that may be referred or are indicated
  • Maintain confidential records of all individual meetings, baseline assessments, confidential correspondence and case notes with program teens (in a locked file)
  • Provide referrals to local specialty professionals for long term or intensive mental health interventions
  • Provide appropriate non-confidential information for each teen's tracking binder; including a participant profile to be updated annually
  • Be in regular contact with the assigned clinical supervisor to review cases
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work or other related field required; Master's degree preferred.  
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a counselor or counseling intern
  • Dedicated youth work professional with excellent engagement and communication skills with middle schoolers - verbal, writing, listening, group work, speaking and presentation.
  • Experience teaching in school-based settings preferred.

Tutor/Group Leader, School Year 2013-2014: Maya Angelou Public Charter Schools, Washington, DC

Maya Angelou Public Charter Schools (MAPCS) in Washington, D.C. is seeking tutors/group leaders for the 2013-2014 school year.

The Tutor/Group Leader will work as a support/aide to all of the Component Leaders. Some students may have identified special education needs. Other students may be behind academically and need creative and careful instruction. This is a part-time position for the school year.

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Provide individual and small group tutoring to students in need.  Involve each student with their homework or remedial work that is needed.  Activities will be provided by the Education Coordinator
  • Return books and other materials to the designated locked area at the end of each session
  • Provide creative educational ideas that will help participants' attendance and participation
  • Research and develop College Readiness materials and curricula for students
  • Develop academic resources for the classrooms
  • Provide assistance with Saturday and summer programming as relevant
  • Engage participants through dialogue and activity in a creative and nurturing manner
  • Assist the Education Coordinator in collecting data that will be helpful in developing the academic profile and plan for each participant
  • Provide feedback to Education Coordinator that will help enhance academic performance
  • Assist component leader with escorting and providing supervision for participants as needed (bathrooms, trips, outside)
  • Assist component leaders with daily functions and operations of their component (usually identified by component leaders on how best they should be utilized)
  • Assist component leader in creating and maintaining an appropriate learning environment
  • Attend ongoing meetings and trainings offered by CAS-Carrera
  • Administrative tasks as identified by the Program Coordinator
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in college or a recent graduate   
  • Experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong literacy and math skills
