Wesley Housing Development Corporation (Wesley Housing) is an award-winning, non-profit housing developer, headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia. Wesley Housing's mission is to develop, own, operate, preserve, and maintain affordable housing and sustain quality communities for low-and moderate-income persons in Northern Virginia.
Our service-enriched housing program--Building Communities of Promise--combines affordable permanent rental housing with support services to build strong, stable communities. We offer a comprehensive range of supportive, educational, and social services to strengthen families and neighborhoods. Classes include English for Speakers of Other Languages, computer instruction, and financial literacy. After-school programs include weekday Homework Help, reading tutoring, youth enrichment and character building, and summer camp.
POSITION SYNOPSIS:
The After-School Program Coordinator works directly with children and youth in a community-based setting. Wesley Housing after-school programs serve families in low-income, affordable housing properties; many of whom are from immigrant families where English may not be the primary language.
The after-school programs support children in a holistic manner addressing both academic and social aspects of their lives. We strive to help students achieve academic success by providing them time and assistance to complete homework, reading, and special projects at the Center. Special guests enhance the program by implementing a range of additional enrichment activities such as team building games, nutrition, arts & crafts, yoga & mindfulness, and more.
Key Responsibilities
§ Plan and implement an after -school program for 20 elementary-school age children that includes homework help and academic enrichment
§ Manage daily Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) Kids Café supper and snack distributions, strictly adhering to CAFB's guidelines
§ Maintain positive behavior management techniques, incorporate the Development Assets, and implement appropriate consequences/behavior modifications to children as needed
§ Communicate with children and parents in a nurturing, positive, and supportive manner
§ Become familiar with the Developmental Assets and incorporate them into the program
§ Support children as they complete their homework assignments and ensure that they are reading each afternoon
§ Match youth with volunteer tutors and guide volunteers, including Masters-level social work students, appropriately
- Partner with organizations and service providers to bring additional enrichment programs for children/youth
§ Support program guests and/or contractors with behavior management when they are leading activities with the children
- Communicate regularly with local schools to support educational development of youth
- Plan, schedule, attend, and supervise field trips
- Recruit children and youth for after-school, SAT prep, and other programming, ensuring that all registration forms are filled out completely
§ Attend periodic staff meetings and trainings
§ Maintain accurate records of program participants, including collecting quarterly report cards, and enter them into program database in a timely manner
§ Support grant funding and reporting by providing data on enrollment and progress of program participants
§ Maintain a clean and organized program space
§ Follow applicable district, agency, and grant policies and regulations
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- At least two years experience working with school-age children, preferably in a group setting (e.g. camp counselor, volunteer at after-school program, etc.)
- Applicants must possess high school diploma or equivalent and pass a background check. Bachelors degree in Education, Social Work, Psychology, etc. preferred
- Excellent English (written and oral) skills essential. Bilingual in Spanish, Amharic, Arabic, or other language prevalent in the community. . . a plus!
- Culturally sensitive with an ability to work with a variety of cultures
- Physical ability to stoop, bend, twist and reach; to lift, carry and handle equipment, tables/chairs, and boxes without assistance; and to provide visual and auditory supervision of children
- Must be able to function well in a noisy, busy environment that includes the comings and goings of students and their parents. Flexibility to supervise students and lead activities outdoors in cold weather
Length of Contract
- 2014-2015 school year
Time Commitment
- 20 hours per week, core operating hours are M-F 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
