Development/Communications intern
About the Role:
The Thomas B. Fordham Institute, a national education-reform think tank, is looking for a communications and development intern to support the D.C. office this fall. This person will assist in a number of nonprofit-management roles critical to maintaining and improving strong foundation relations. Daily duties include, promoting Fordham's research and events to new audiences, copy-editing grant proposals, and tracking Fordham's impact on the education-policy debate. The position also includes clerical and administrative duties.
This is a diverse and challenging position, and needs a creative and committed individual. Potential interns should be college graduates that are organized, detail-oriented, and able to work in a fast-paced and flexible environment. Experience in education policy or teaching are always plus. We're excited to teach the ins-and-outs of development and communications, but a desire to learn, accept constructive criticism, and be proactive is vital to success in this role.
The position reports to Fordham's communications and development managers, is a full-time position (Monday–Friday; 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.), and pays $12.50 an hour, and will be approximately 70 percent development and 30 percent communications. The internship will run from February-June 2015. By the end of the internship, this intern will gain expertise in:
1. Development: Measuring and evaluating organization impact; researching and strategizing on new funder prospects; writing grant reports and drafting funder correspondence; and creating materials to inform and engage ongoing funder relationships.
2. Communications: Assisting in planning events and running social media campaigns to engage some of the brightest minds around the toughest problems; and writing a plethora of communications content for websites, emails, and newsletters;
Qualifications:
· Bachelor's degree in English, communications, political science or related liberal-arts field, with demonstrated interest in communications, development, and nonprofit management;
· Possesses a passion for working in education policy to make a difference for kids ;
· Experience in the classroom, interning at non-profits or in education policy, or working on student newspapers a plus;
· Self-motivated and a fast learner, with excellent written and verbal communication skills;
· Organized and able to prioritize projects (many of which may be time-sensitive);
· Thorough and thoughtful—he/she will be helping design events and media- and funder-outreach strategies, all of which require research chops and an ability to make and see connections;
· Creative, flexible, and in possession of a good sense of humor.; and
· Familiarity with social-networking tools (Twitter, Facebook, Google+), Adobe products, data-analysis platforms, including Google Analytics and Microsoft Excel
