Imagine Hope Community Charter School (Tolson Campus) in Washington DC is seeking a  Special Education Teacher for the 2014-2015 school years.

In this position you will be required to perform duties that are necessary and appropriate to ensure that special education students receive services outlined on their Individual Educational Plan (I.E.P.) in accordance with federal law.  Services include physical, emotional and mental support to special education students as needed.

The special education teacher will assist teachers and other professionals by providing appropriate instructional, self-help, and social emotional/behavioral support to special education students in order to enhance student skill development, independence, and access to the general education classroom and curriculum.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

•             Maintain appropriate workplace decorum including adhering to

schedule as outlined.

•             Work with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce

             learning and social skills initially introduced by the teacher or other professional.

•             Assist in the implementation of Individual Education Plans for the students and monitor their progress.

•                Models conversation, manners, cleanup activities, listening, and everyday

      interactions for the purpose of demonstrating appropriate social behavior in a

      culturally sensitive manner.

•                Monitors student’s daily schedule and behavior plan (e.g. class schedule, toileting, medication, appetite, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.

•             Documents student’s daily activities (e.g. behavior, completed assignments, on/off task times, etc.) for the purpose of completing daily logs and student’s hourly activities

•             Updates special education teacher(s) regarding student progress.

•               Works with other professionals, such as speech therapist, social worker,

      occupational and physical therapists.

•                Communicates with teachers and other district personnel for the purpose of

       assisting in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.

 

Behavioral Assignments

•                Supports student(s) with emotional or behavior concerns and assist them in developing appropriate social skills.

•                Implements under the supervision of assigned teacher, behavioral plans designed by IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.

•                Responds to emergency situations (e.g. injured students, fights, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.

 

 

Administrative Assignments:

 

•             Assists classroom teachers with maintaining student records/files.

•             Performs clerical duties as assigned that relate to specific student needs.

•             Administers tests, homework assignments, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of

   supporting teachers in the classrooms.

•             Attends IEP meetings and professional development sessions as assigned for the

          purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.

•             Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient

         and effective functioning of the work unit.

 

Requirements

In accordance with the federal No Child Left Behind regulations, candidates must meet “highly qualified" teacher requirements before being hired for teaching positions. Please do not apply to this position if you are not HQT.

In D.C. charter schools, this means at least a bachelor’s degree and successful completion of the Praxis exam in the core subject area being taught.
