[YEP-DC] Job Posting - Production and Research Assistant, Thomas B. Fordham Institute

Production and Research Assistant

Would you like to work at the forefront of U.S. education policy and research? Are you interested in education reform? Eager to use your graphic design, communications, and research skills (and learn more)? Organized, detail-oriented, creative, and a stickler for meeting deadlines? Know how to juggle multiple projects and tasks? If so, you might have a future as the Thomas B. Fordham Institute's production and research assistant.

The Position

The Fordham Institute is the nation's leader in advancing educational excellence for every child through high-quality research, analysis, and commentary. We are an independent, non-profit organization with offices in Washington, D.C., Columbus, and Dayton, Ohio.

We are looking for an exceptional applicant to join our small but growing team in Washington. We seek bright, proactive, hard-working individuals who can excel in an intellectually stimulating and often intense work environment. The position reports to the Vice President for Research and will work collaboratively with Fordham's research and communications teams to shepherd studies through the design, layout, production, and release stages, as well as support projects in the research phase as needed.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

- Oversee layout and production of large Fordham reports, including communicating with copy editors and layout designers, and attending to loose ends prior to publication;

- Design and produce small reports and policy briefs in-house;

- Assist the communications team in brainstorming and designing graphical elements related to a report's release, including infographics;

- Act as a liaison between the research and communications teams to ensure the smooth and successful release of Fordham studies;

- Assist the research team in project management (including communicating with external scholars and contractors);

- Help gather and analyze data for Fordham's in-house research projects and for other external projects as needed.

The successful candidate will have prior experience in layout and graphic design, communications, and/or research. We encourage applicants who are eager to expand their existing skills and learn new ones. We expect this entry-level role to evolve, in large part based on the strengths and interests of the selected candidate. Specific qualifications:

- Prior experience in (or exposure to) layout and design. Knowledge of desktop publishing software such as InDesign, QuarkXPress, or similar is preferred;

- Prior experience in (or exposure to) graphic design, including the design and creation of infographics. Knowledge of photo editing or illustrator software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Visual.ly, Visme, or similar is preferred;

- Research skills, including writing literature reviews, collecting and analyzing data, and synthesizing academic writing;

- A basic understanding of education policy and the key players, arguments, and ideas in education reform;

- Computer savvy in Word and Excel;

- Superior written and oral communication skills;

- Evidence of exceptional organization and time-management skills (including coordinating multiple projects simultaneously, juggling competing deadlines, and working across teams);

- Bachelor's degree and demonstration of academic excellence

Additional Information

The Thomas B. Fordham Institute is prepared to offer an attractive compensation package, including a competitive salary plus generous health insurance, 403(b) retirement support, vacation benefits, and parking/transit reimbursement for full-time employees. We are an equal opportunity employer.

The position is located in our national office in downtown Washington, D.C.
