School Year 2015-2016 Fellowships
For Love of Children (FLOC) is a nonprofit organization that was founded in Washington, D.C. in 1965. FLOC provides educational services beyond the classroom to help low-income students succeed from first grade to college and career. Through example and partnership, For Love of Children teaches and empowers students to transform their own futures. For Love of Children operates two programs that allow students to improve their educational skills and transform their lives:
Since its inception in 1994, For Love of Children's Neighborhood Tutoring Program (NTP) has been providing one-on-one tutoring to students in 1st through 12th grade. NTP uses step-by-step curricula to help students to gain the fundamental skills they need to reach grade level competency in reading and math.
The Scholars Program is a college preparation and success program that begins with students in the 6th grade and supports them until they complete a postsecondary degree. Through innovative workshops and activities, we empower students to develop the academic and life skills they need for college and career success.
Fellowship Program
For Love of Children's 10 month stipend fellowship opportunity is for individuals who want to commit time teaching, transforming and empowering students in an out of school time environment. Fellows will be placed in the NTP or Scholars program and will support the daily coordination and operation of program efforts. All Fellows will have the opportunity to complete a Capstone project. This project will be guided by a full-time staff member and will allow the Fellow to complete a project that will benefit both our organization as well as be usable in the Fellow's resume or professional portfolio. Examples of capstone projects may include a supplement to one of our intervention curricula, or a handbook on best practices for managing teenage students.
In addition, Fellows can expect the following:
- Professional Development opportunities around college access policy, curriculum development, non-profit management, and much more
- Structured networking opportunities with FLOC's Board of Directors
- Curriculum Writing experience
- Group facilitation training and experience
- Access to our 1,600 acre, Outdoor Education Center in Harper's Ferry, West Virginia
- Connections to FLOC's large network of staff and student alumni
Fellowship Placements
NTP
Fellows in the Neighborhood Tutoring Program (NTP) will work with permanent, full-time NTP staff to support 3 weekly tutoring programs. The Fellow will interact with a large number of students and volunteers on a weekly basis ensuring that programs run smoothly and effectively. Specifically, the Fellow supports tutors and makes sure that they're maximizing instructional time with their students and using NTP's proven curricula appropriately. Fellows also play an important role tracking student progress and evaluating student growth. The NTP Fellow would work collaboratively with full-time staff members on this project.
Scholars
Fellows in the Scholars program strive to empower young adults as they navigate their educational experience and become life-long learners. The fellows will begin to facilitate weekly workshops for students in middle school and high school after receiving extensive training. Past workshops include leadership development, career exploration and college exploration. The fellows will also be able to bring their own passion into workshops to create fun and interactive workshops with students. Fellows will also play an important role in preparing materials to support curriculum, managing the progress of assigned students and supporting workshop volunteers.
