[dcab-l] Re: Banjo Picker Bill Blackburn

Bill Blackburn moved to Arizona years ago, was playing banjo in a band called Sagegrass.  He might still be in Sagegrass. I last saw him in Arizona in 2011 at the Benson BG festival, used to see him some years at IBMA.  He was a high school friend of John Duffey.  Together, they played with Lucky Chapman and the Ozark Mountain Boys, out of Frederick MD.  I still have the 45 rpm record they made about 1956.  The songs are "I've Waited So Long" and "Blue Grass", an instrumental written by John Duffey.

[YEP-DC] New YEP-DC blog post: Removing Standards and Accountability Structures from ESEA Means Leaving Behind Millions of Students

While some of us were on summer vacation, Congress was at work on reauthorizing  the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Now, the House and Senate have each passed their own bills and must reconcile the two in conference committee when recess ends in September.

Miss all the action? Get caught up with a recap from Recess guest blogger Darien Salehy, who lays out what's in the two proposals and explains how both bills may end up having dangerous consequences for America's most underprivileged students. Read it all on Recess!

[YEP-DC] Job Posting: Hiring Experienced Educators for Part time Opportunities in DC

Do you have passions and skills that you want to share with kids in DC?

Want to make some extra cash while you're in grad school or launching a business or writing the next great American novel?

Want to be part of an innovative teaching agency and startup?

Meet Enriched:  a community talent hub that supports student learning in New Orleans and now DC

We connect schools with awesome flexible staff, like substitute teachers, coaches, and guest speakers.  Enriched has been gaining a lot of momentum, and we're excited that folks are getting behind the idea that every moment in a child's education can and must be meaningful.  Can you help make that vision come to life?

As a part-time guest educator, you'll teach in one of our partner schools, however many days per month you specify.

We'll match you with schools, grade levels, and subjects that are a good fit for your skills and interests-- and you'll get the chance to work with students and educators across the city.

We're looking for folks with a compelling presence, who can clearly communicate ideas, and who can be flexible and think on their feet.  Compensation is $20/hour for lead teaching positions and $15/hour for support staff positions.

Research shows that students spend a year with substitute teachers over the course of their educational career, so let's make that time meaningful and enriching.

Intrigued?  Check out our website to learn more-- or email with questions at Darla@EnrichedSchools.com.  I'd be happy to chat via phone.

Ready to sign up?  Head over here to input your interests and availability.  Think this could be awesome for someone else you know?  Refer them right here!

[YEP-DC] Request for Applications: Start the School Year Off Right-Apply for a Team First Book-DC Book Grant!

Dear Educators,

If you're a classroom teacher and/or lead an organization serving kids in the DC area in need of books, apply for a Team First Book-DC book grant today!

Team First Book-DC raises funds to provide eligible classrooms, school libraries, and programs with high-quality, brand-new books to the students they serve, and we are currently accepting applications for our next grant cycle. After receiving a grant, educators can select books from the First Book National Marketplace and create lesson plans and classroom activities using these books. If not intended for a school or classroom library, these books are then given to the kids to take home and keep.

If you work at a school or organization that predominantly serves students from low-income families and/or works primarily with children from military families or those with disabilities, please click here for an application or share this link with other organizations and/or classroom teachers that you think might be interested.

Applications will be accepted until 11:59pm on Friday, September 11, 2015.

If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or my Applications Co-Chair, Anna Williford, via e-mail at applications.firstbookdc@gmail.com. We are happy to answer any questions you might have.

Don't delay! Apply today!

Yours in the literacy movement,

Kaily
