[YEP-DC] Free Teacher Workshop - Saturday, April 20th - Using Art to Teach Tolerance and Acceptance

Dear Educator,

We would like to invite you to a free Teacher Workshop on Saturday, April 20th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in conjunction with the current exhibit at the University of Maryland Art Gallery -- Network of Mutuality: 50 Years Post-Birminghamhttp://www.artgallery.umd.edu/exhibition/network-mutuality-50-years-post-birmingham

The exhibit consists of contemporary art, design, and video that responds to the issues of human rights, racial inequality, and injustice, with a particular focus on the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.  We believe artists often
find ways to express their feelings about difficult subject matter through their work and, in doing so, ask the viewer to respond to these unique perspectives.

How can a teacher approach these immensely important subjects fraught with complicated emotions? How can students become aware of issues of prejudice, identity and perception in their daily lives? How do artists reference history in unique ways? How can visual expression move the discussion forward?

We invite you to participate in a workshop that will provide methods, exercises, and resources.
It will prepare you to engage your students in meaningful discussions about these artworks, and the world around them, through written and visual art activities.  Meet University of Maryland faculty and other local high school and college teachers who are interested in sharing ideas for using the art classroom to grapple with difficult realities.

Materials and lunch will be provided.

Please R.S.V.P. by Monday, April 15th with regrets or plans to attend.

If you have colleagues that may be interested, please pass this along!

Sincerely,

Katie Coogan
