Re: [BloomingdaleActionList] Update on DDOT Surface Water Management Project in Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park

DDOT spoke of places underground water storage and/or rain gardens only in the park spaces that are in the "bump outs" at 1st & T outside of Rustik and at Rhode Island and T.  Both of those gardens are DC property (having been literally carved out of DC streets).  The federal land is across the sidewalks from the two proposed DDOT proposed rain gardens.  In both cases, the federal land is the triangle directly between the T Street and Rhode Island Avenue sidewalks.  Those plots are not part of the DDOT program.

Thanks for the report.

Was anything mentioned about the two parks (Flatiron and City Cleaners/Rustik) being federal property and how that would affect the probability and timing of implementation of the water gardens?

Dear Neighbors,

On the afternoon of Wednesday, October 17th, engineers from the DDOT Bloomingdale Surface Water Management Project and I met to review conceptual designs for low-impact development (LID) features to mitigate flooding in and around the intersection at 1st Street and Rhode Island Avenue NW. The approximately $1m project includes the following proposed design features that will yield approximately 300,000 gallons of total system performance.
  1. Permeable pavement and underground storage in the alley segment directly behind Mt Bethel Baptist Church
  2. Permeable pavement and underground storage in the alley segment between Thomas and T Streets west of 1st Street
  3. Rain garden and underground storage in the triangle park located at T Street and Rhode Island Avenue in front of the The Flatiron Condominium
  4. Rain garden and underground storage in the triangle park located at T Street and Rhode Island Avenue in front of the Rustik Tavern
  5. Underground storage beneath the median along the 100 Block of Rhode Island Avenue
  6. Catch basin enhancements
  7. Bio-retention cells on either side of Thomas Street near the intersection with 1st Street
DDOT will also coordinate with the DDOE rain barrel team to install rainwater harvesting systems in the triangle parks in front of The Flatiron and Rustik to facilitate the watering of plants in each park using captured storm water.

NspireGreen will lead a Bloomingdale community meeting on Saturday, November 3rd, from 10am to noon, to present detailed designs and construction plans for the LID features listed above. Construction is scheduled to begin on November 16, 2012 and will continue for approximately 6 months. For more information, please contact Chancee Lundy at clundy@nspiregreen.com.

NspireGreen will also lead a community meeting about the DDOT LeDroit Park Surface Water Management Project on Saturday, October 27th. Construction in LeDroit Park is scheduled to begin on November 1, 2012 and will continue for approximately 3 months. For more information on the LeDroit Park effort, please contact Veronica Davis at vdavis@nspiregreen.com.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Hugh
