As some of you may know, many years ago I met a
songwriter from
writing has been an inspiration to me all these years. Since
knowing him, I've recorded 24 of his songs, 10 of those on
one CD called "19th Century Man", a little gem which achieved
some nice reviews, including Bluegrass Unlimited.
This love lost song, entitled "Provisions", was one of the
saddest songs I'd ever heard, and delivered with, of all things,
humor! This song appeared on two of Fred's CDs: "Highway
Honkey Tonk", and "On the Rim of a Wheel".
I learned the song immediately, but discovered, when I sang it
publicly, folks said they couldn't understand the song's meaning.
What a dilemma!
So, having the kernel of the song from Fred, I essentially re-wrote
the verses (only) to reflect the "Provisions" necessary for leaving a
relationship, but leaving the chorus, melody, and feeling as originally
penned by Fred. Although the song lost its wonderful "laughter
through tears" quality (to me), it seemed to acquire an identifiable
pathos.
This song was recorded at Micah Solomon's Studio "Oasis", and
includes only a trio of instruments:
Willie Oldes Bass
Fred Travers Dobro and Harmony
Ed Schaeffer Guitar (D-76) and Vocal
This recording was done after Fred Travers left Rattlesnake Hill, while
he played with Paul Adkins and Borderline, and just before he joined the
Seldom Scene. It appeared on my CD called "Acoustic Inventions".
