5.0 out of 5 stars Josh Graves telling it the way it was. October 27, 2012
By Howard Parker
Format:Paperback
This is an opportunity to hear the iconic musician speak his piece in
his own words long after his passing. Fred Bartenstein has edited
Josh's memoir interviews with an oh so light touch.

Josh speaks in a matter of fact, unapologetic tone as a kid that just
happened to choose his own destiny and manage to ride a 60 year career
to a legendary status. He did it as a side man with the most beloved
bluegrass band of all time and he did it following his muse wherever
it led him.

You learn of Josh Graves the man and musician of course but, Graves is
fascinating when he details the business of early country and
bluegrass music. He details the economics, pitfalls and real danger of
being on the road during that time. Not for the faint of heart.

So much has changed of the years in some respects. So much hasn't
changed at all.

Fred Bartenstein has given us a compact memoir Of "Uncle Josh",
compact and straight forward. Josh speaking his mind, straight as an
arrow, no frills. No apologies. Josh Graves telling us the way it was.

I'm going to read this again.

Subject: NEBG: Bluegrass Bluesman: Josh Graves Memoir

Fred Bartenstein has recently edited a wonderful memoir of the musical life
of Burkett "Josh" Graves. As most of this audience knows, Josh was the
"uncle" of bluegrass dobro, and anyone playing the instrument today owes
him tribute. At the encouragement of bandmates Lester Flatt and Earl
Scruggs, Josh added more fuel to the already revolutionary fire that the
Foggy Mountain Boys brought to bluegrass music.

Through Fred's light touch with numerous recorded interviews and scrap
books, Josh relates his take on like on the road, the music business, and
the dynamics and personalities of the Foggy Mountain Boys and other
performers in the early country music circuit. A great read.

Greetings Bloomingdale Community,

I hope that you are all safe from Sandy and recovering well. It has been
great speaking with all of you over the last few weeks. As most of you know
on November 3, DDOT will be hosting a community meeting and walk through of
the planned infrastructure improvements for the Bloomingdale neighborhood.
These improvements will help alleviate flooding on the roadway during storm
events. The meeting will take place at Mount Bethel Baptist Church (corner
of 1st St. NW and Rhode Island Ave. NW) at 10:00 am. Immediately following
the meeting, DDOT will lead the community on a walk through to show the
exact locations where construction will be taking place and the types of
solutions that will be implemented.

Although we passed out nearly 400 flyers in the affected corridor this past
Saturday we would appreciate your help in spreading the word to your
neighbors and community listservs. The flyer is attached to this message.

We look forward to seeing you on November 3rd.

All the best,

Neighbors-

I hope no one will mind that I am sending this announcement to this list - this event is not in Bloomingdale, but close in proximity, and close to many hearts.

Please join DC residents to "Stand with Maryland" at an event on Monday, October 29, at Busboys and Poets on 14th to support the passage of Question 6 on the Maryland ballot on November 6.  As someone who was a 25 year resident of Maryland, I am joining other DC residents to support the passage of  marriage equality In Maryland. (While many of the names you will recognize are Democrats, this is an event for all who stand for equality.)

The event will have a cash bar, with drink specials created for the event.

I know some of you have already attended an event to support this cause, and perhaps some of you are lucky to be going to the dinner tonight, but if you haven't yet participated, please consider it, as the clock is ticking and Maryland needs our financial support for staff , advertising and direct mail.

Thanks so much, and hope to see many of you on Monday night. Also, please feel free to share this with others. Email me directly with any questions.

We seek individuals who are passionate about transforming the DC school system and making a significant difference in the lives of public school students, parents, principals, teachers, and Central Office employees.

A listing of all open positions in the DCPS Central Office can be found at the DCPS Careers "Support Our Schools" page.

Below are just a few of the exciting job opportunities at DCPS that will have a tangible impact on our students:

Coordinator, Central Office Effectiveness

As DCPS moves into the next phase of its human capital reform agenda, the time is ripe for DCPS to focus on the Central Office staff that work in the headquarters building, support DC schools, and help to ensure that all DCPS students receive a world-class education that prepares them for college, career, and life. The work of the newly created Central Office Effectiveness division will parallel that of the Teacher Effectiveness and Principal Effectiveness divisions, and will touch on the entire human capital management cycle for approximately 600 Central Office employees.

The Coordinator, Central Office Effectiveness will support the team's mission to improve various human capital processes.  This Coordinator will begin by supporting the team's efforts to redesign the current compensation and classification process for all Central Office employees.  This comprehensive redesign will deal with issues such as how Central Office employees' jobs are classified, how employees are compensated, and a career ladder/promotions policy that clearly articulates how we develop the potential of our top employees.  The other immediate focus of this role is the improvement of communications and morale-boosting activities across Central Office, which will include planning and executing fun events that bring people together and also enhance understanding of key work streams across DCPS.  The Coordinator will also support the design of a new performance evaluation system that will be simple, transparent and encourage honest and structured dialogue between managers and employees.  Additional potential projects include: enhancing the current onboarding process, developing an exit interview process, and designing retention approaches to ensure we keep our very best talent.

For more about this position see the posting on our DCPS Careers website or contact us at dcpscareers@dc.gov.

Coordinator, Critical Response Team

Do you have a deep passion to help the students in the District of Columbia?  Are you ready for a frontline position in urban education reform?  Are you looking to learn about how complex organizations function?

If you've answered yes to these questions, then we may have a position for you on one of the most successful and productive teams in DCPS—the Critical Response Team (CRT) within the Office of the Chief of Staff.

The District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) is seeking Project Coordinators for the Critical Response Team to respond quickly, reliably, and efficiently to urgent requests from DCPS stakeholders. The team has a proven track record of effectively and thoroughly resolving tough issues that constituents raise with the chancellor. Every day presents new and challenging problems to solve on behalf of the students of DCPS.

For more about this position see the posting on our DCPS careers website or contact us at dcpscareers@dc.gov.

STEM Professional Learning Designer

Professional development is a top priority for the Chancellor and is integral to her plan for having a highly effective teacher in every DCPS classroom.  Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, DCPS has been implementing a research-based coaching model, ensuring that teachers receive targeted, ongoing job-embedded support.  Furthermore, all district-wide professional development in support of the academic plan will be created by experts in professional development design.  We believe that creating effective learning experiences for adults requires a unique set of skills.  This new position reflects that belief and the value we put on outstanding professional development for our teachers.  The STEM Professional Learning Designer is charged with providing our teachers with the learning they need to ensure that all DCPS children build a strong foundation in math literacy, science literacy, and problem-solving skills.

Over the next two years, DCPS will continue its aggressive roll-out of the Common Core State Standards.  The STEM Professional Learning Designer is at the center of this work.  The STEM Professional Learning Designer will design and implement professional development experiences for teachers, as well as instructional superintendents, school leaders, master educators, and instructional coaches to address the new K-12 Math standards and the instructional practices DCPS has determined will most effectively enable students to master the new standards.  In addition, the STEM Professional Learning Designer will set a cohesive strategy for and coordinate district-wide professional development experiences for secondary Science teachers.

Thanks, Patrick.  You're the best!

Just went to Big Bear  Its been about two hours since  I cleaned catch basins this morning. One was getting clogged from the other direction.

So, if everyone can keep checking while the weather is not too crazy to leave the house , and keep the water flowing before the lines reach capacity...

Thanks!

Betsy

Good morning.

Sandy has turned left so we will not get off easily. Full moon today.

Just checked my catch basins and leaves are starting to block them. Yes, my
block had leaves cleaned up by DDOT on Saturday, but it doesn't take many
to wash down to block the catch basin.

I just scooped them up and tossed into the nearest tree box. Start upstream
and work toward the catch basin or they dislodge and wash into catch basin.
it just takes a couple of minutes., so if someone could adopt a catch basin
this morning, it would be great!!!

Do it now, if you can , before rain gets heavier.

Wind picks up midday. Worst winds predicted for 6pm Monday til  3am
Tuesday.

Good luck. Keep those cell phones charged!

Betsy

[BloomingdaleActionList] Preparation for Hurricane Sandy

Dear Neighbors,

As you know, we have an exceptionally large hurricane headed for our part of the country. This will again test our over-taxed water infrastructure systems and our historically unreliable electric grid.

Please gather enough of the following items for you and your neighbors as a precaution and share your recommendations for what else to add to the list.

Hurricane survival kit-
  • water
  • energy- food, batteries, wood, fuel, matches, etc
  • healthcare- first aid kit, medication, toiletries
  • light- candles, flashlights, etc
  • tools- can opener, swiss army knife, etc
The DC Government provides free sandbags to help residents manage overland flooding. Pick up your sandbags at 1st & Thomas Streets NW, just north of Windows Cafe. Large plastic campaign signs readily available in the streets also make excellent flood barriers across doorways.

Saint Martin's Church at North Capitol & T Street NW is a safe space for relief efforts if needed.

The Harry Thomas, Sr. Recreation Center at Lincoln Road & Seaton Place NE has maintained electricity and public internet access throughout all recent outages in the neighborhood. It's a great place to recharge your electronics and catch up on email until grid power returns. They also have showers if you lose hot water.

I'll be patrolling the Bloomingdale streets by bike, especially south of Rhode Island Avenue, to help keeps limbs cleared and maintain public safety. Please stop me if you need anything or feel free to visit my house or call or text me anytime -- 70 R St NW, 240.925.1079.

Please come out for the community safety walk on Tuesday night at 7pm starting at Windows Cafe (rain or shine) to check in for your block.

Thank you,

Hugh

[YEP-DC] Rocketship Education Network Leadership Program Now Accepting Applications (Elementary Dean/AP)

Position Description: School Leadership Positions at Rocketship Education
2013-2014 School Year

About Rocketship Education
Founded in 2006, Rocketship Education (www.rsed.org) is a California-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation whose mission is to eliminate the achievement gap by building a national school system of K-5 charter schools. Rocketship Education is the leading public school system for low-income elementary students.  In pioneering its transformative public school model, Rocketship has delivered exceptional academic results through a focus on developing outstanding educators, empowering parents to advocate for their children and communities, and individualizing instruction for all students.

Rocketship strives to eliminate the achievement gap in our lifetimes by partnering with cities, school districts, and communities across the US that share a similar sense of urgency.  By bringing Rocketship schools to thousands of low-income students and inspiring other public school systems to adopt similar practices for high-quality, scalable impact, this ambitious goal is attainable.

The Position
We are currently accepting applications for our 2013-2014 Network Fellows Leadership Program, an intensive one-year program designed to support and prepare future principals (Network Fellows) to open and successfully run high-performing Rocketship schools.  All Rocketship principals serve as Network Fellows prior to becoming principals.

This position will be a school-based role in the San Jose, CA.  Each Rocketship school is supported by a Regional Support Office, which is a division of the National Team.

Program Structure

We believe that on-the-ground experience is the best preparation for school leadership so Network Fellows typically work as assistant principals or academic deans in Rocketship schools while they participate in the Network Fellows Leadership Program.  In addition to the experiential learning gained from these roles, Network Fellows also benefit from collaborating with a selective cohort through monthly training workshops, individual coaching, and hands-on opportunities such as external school visits, 360 feedback surveys, and external professional development conferences.

Pathway to Principal Positions

The goal of the Network Leadership Program is to prepare program participants to move into Rocketship principal positions.  Whether or not they actually become principals at the end of the Network Fellows year depends on a variety of factors including their performance, and positions available. Even more importantly, we are deeply invested in helping our Network Fellows find the right principal fit – whether that means taking over an existing Rocketship school, starting a new school in an existing region, or founding a new school in a new region – and finding a strong match with a particular school and community context.  Network Fellows who demonstrate interest and readiness in starting new Rocketship schools will be formally selected and begin planning for their new schools by December the year before the school opens. Some Network Leadership Program graduates may continue as assistant principals or academic deans for additional years beyond the program year before moving into a principal role.

Network Fellows - Typical Candidate Profile

·         3-5 years of full time teaching experience demonstrating exceptional results in a K-8 classroom

·         1-2 years of school leadership experience (dean, grade level chair, assistant principal, instructional coach, etc.)

·         Intention to become principal in 1-2 years

·         Highly adaptable and able to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment

·         Relentless pursuit of high expectations for student achievement

·         Strong leadership skills and personal drive to overcome obstacles

·         Ability to engage and empower parents, families, and community members

·         Ability to coach and develop others

·         Meets all additional qualifications for academic dean and assistant principal positions

Founding Fellows Track

The Founding Fellows track is a special opportunity for Network Fellows who are committed to being a part of the founding leadership team for a specific new Rocketship region.  Founding Fellows apply to join Rocketship 1-3 years before the start of the region and participate fully in the Network Leadership Program in their first year at Rocketship, including serving in a leadership role in an existing Rocketship school.  Additionally, Founding Fellows make several trips each year to the expansion region and work closely with the Rocketship National Development team to take on projects related to founding the new region.  Through this work, Founding Fellows prepare to serve on the founding school's leadership team and eventually become principals of the first few schools in a new region.

Founding Fellows - Additional Qualifications

·         Interest in a pre-identified high-potential Rocketship expansion region (see application page for current regional options)

·         Willingness to travel to the designated region 2-4 times per year

We are seeking Founding Fellows for 13-14 for the following regions:

·         Milwaukee, WI

·         Nashville, TN

·         Memphis, TN

·         Washington, DC

·         Indianapolis, IN

·         Las Vegas, NV

·         Dallas, TX

·         San Antonio, TX

·         Houston, TX

Other
Compensation

Based on dean and assistant principal roles and commensurate with experience; all program costs and travel are covered by Rocketship Education.
