[YEP-DC] National Youth HIV/ AIDS Awareness Day

WASHINGTON (April 11, 2013) – Advocates for Youth, in collaboration with Metro TeenAIDS and several campus and community partners, will kick off the first Annual National HIV/ AIDS Awareness Day (NYHAAD) at Howard University on Thursday, April 11th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Today's young people are the first generation who have never known a world without HIV and AIDS. In the United States, one in four new HIV infections are among youth ages 13 to 24. Every month 1,000 young people are infected with HIV and over 34,000 young people are currently living with HIV across the country. While there has been much talk about an AIDS-Free Generation, we know that is not possible without our nation's youth. Young people and their allies are determined to end this epidemic once and for all and this day is a way to acknowledge the great work young people are already engaging in to do so.

The creation of National Youth HIV & AIDS Awareness Day is a momentous step towards acknowledging and addressing the needs of youth — and towards holding our leaders accountable each year as we continue this fight. Only by investing in young people in all aspects of the HIV and AIDS response will we achieve the dream of an AIDS-free generation.

Join us as we commemorate the first National Youth HIV/ AIDS Awareness Day on Thursday, April 11, 2013 from 6- 8:30 p.m. in the Digital Auditorium of the Howard University Blackburn Center. This event will engage, educate, include, and empower Howard University students and community about the impact of HIV/ AIDS on young people through speakers, performances, and testimonials. This event is free and open to the public.
