[YEP-DC] Capital City PCS is looking for volunteers to work one-on-one with 10th grade students!

Capital City PCS is looking for sponsors for the 10th grade portfolio process

The passage portfolio process serves as a culmination of students' academic experiences thus far with an opportunity for students to reflect on their growth as learners, while also developing their skills as writers and presenters to demonstrate their increasing preparation and readiness for college level work.

Do you want to be part of an innovative approach to teaching real-world skills to students? Are you interested in doing community service to support students on their path to college? We need your help!

This spring—from May 6 through June 14, you could help make a difference in the life of a 10th grade student at Capital City by volunteering to help a student complete and prepare to present his/her portfolio. The portfolio includes work samples from all major courses and is accompanied by a reflective essay where students reflect on their strengths and stretches academically and set future goals.  Students present their work to a panel of teachers and community members on June 12-14th in order to be promoted to 11th grade.

Sponsor's Role/Responsibility:

* Help your student revise their essay
* Help your student prepare a PowerPoint for their presentation
* Work with your student on their public speaking skills
* Attend your student's panel presentation

Time Commitment

* Introductory meeting to meet your student and learn about the process.

* One in-person meeting per week at Capital City for 30-45 minutes beginning May 6 until June 12. Ideal times are before school, during lunch or after school. After the initial meeting, you and your student can determine which times are mutually convenient.

* Communication via email, phone or text (reviewing and editing documents)

* Attending your student's panel presentation (on June 12, 13, 14) for moral support. We will aim to match the presentation with your schedule. Panelists see 2-3 presentations with a time commitment of 2-3 hours.

Where
Capital City PCS Upper School is at 100 Peabody Street NW (approximately a mile from the Ft. Totten Metro station and off the K2 and 63 bus lines). All meetings must take place on site.

Thank you for considering this opportunity! If you're interested please email Whitney Graves (wgraves@ccpcs.org) with your name, schedule, occupation (for matching purposes), and contact information.

Thank you,

Whitney Graves
