Organization Overview:
The Horatio Alger Association is a membership-based organization whose mission is three-fold:
• To induct contemporary role models as Members of the Association whose experiences exemplify that opportunities for a successful life are available to all individuals who are dedicated to the principles of integrity, hard work, perseverance, and compassion for others.
• To provide scholarship assistance to deserving young people who have demonstrated integrity and determination in overcoming adversity in their lives and who have shown the academic potential and personal aspiration to make a unique contribution to society.
• To mentor Association scholarship recipients and educate youth about the limitless possibilities that are available through the American free enterprise–system, while underscoring the importance of service to others.
Since 1984 the Association has awarded over $100 million in scholarships to over 20,000 students. Annually over 1,000 scholarships are awarded in the United States and Canada.
The purpose of our educational programs is to help young people who have persevered with their studies even as they confront personal challenges. Horatio Alger Scholars know that higher education is the key to opportunities and a better future. In their determination to succeed, our Scholars are much like Horatio Alger Members—specially selected men and women who have triumphed over adverse circumstances to become leaders in their respective career fields.
Key Responsibilities:
The Horatio Alger Association seeks an educational programs assistant to provide program and administrative support for educational and alumni programs. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
· Assist with administering scholarships to state scholarship recipients
· Respond to emails/phone calls from state scholarship recipients
· Maintain and update student files
· Assist with implementation of the annual National Scholars Conference (week-long event in April)
· Assist with disbursement of funds to state scholarship recipients
· Assist with program implementation for Field Directors program, Collegiate Partner program, Special Assistance Grant program, and other educational programs as necessary
o Draft correspondence
o Assist with mailings
o Produce reports for scholarship program funders
o Assist with data entry
o Generate statistical information for Association reporting from Access db
Assist with scholarship application process
Limited travel is necessary that will include weekends. Occasional overtime required.
Reports to: Director, Educational and Alumni Programs
Skills and Qualifications:
Required
· Bachelor's degree
· Minimum two years of work experience
· Proficiency in use of MS Office suite, specifically MS Access
· Excellent organizational skills
· Demonstrated attention to detail
· Ability to complete multiple tasks with competing deadlines, while ensuring accuracy
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills
· Ability to work well both independently, and in collaboration, with staff and volunteers as a team player.
Desired Qualifications: Previous experience with educational programming, meeting planning, or associations preferred. Familiarity with Dreamweaver. French speaker a plus!
