The Organization
The Thomas B. Fordham Institute is the nation's premier education-policy think tank. Our effectiveness stems from our core school-reform values, our credible research, and our considerable facility at agenda-setting, analyzing, explaining, commenting, and criticizing. Our small endowment gives us a valuable measure of independence.
While Fordham is a relatively small organization, it's a surprisingly complex one. We do well-respected research on important issues of the day, both at the national level and in Ohio. In Ohio, we also serve as a statewide education reform advocacy organization, with substantial impact on K-12 policy across multiple topics. In Dayton and beyond, including an increasing number of other Ohio cities, we're "on the ground" as an authorizer of charter schools and engaged in myriad other activities that bring us into direct contact with real kids, educators, community needs—and the challenges that come with all of these.
This combination of local, statewide, and national perspectives, with each informing and facilitating the other two in multiple ways, makes us unique on the American education scene.

The Position
Fordham is a high-performing organization with a culture of professional autonomy and excellence. However, significant growth in recent years (to an annual budget approaching $6M and a staff of 20 spread over three offices) and continued growth expected in coming years have left us needing greater attention to internal management and procedures. And with a complicated budget, much fund-raising, and an endowment of $43M (invested in an increasingly sophisticated array of vehicles), we also need a senior professional with financial savvy and experience. The board, President, and Executive Vice President seek a dynamic, mission-driven, experienced executive who can harness the significant talent at Fordham, keep the trains running on time, keep us fiscally sound, improve our operations, and help take the organization to new heights. This position is located in our downtown DC office (near Farragut Square), with occasional travel to Ohio (and elsewhere).
Responsibilities
Reporting to the President and Executive Vice President, serving as a member of Fordham's small senior leadership team, and managing a small staff of three, the Senior Executive for Operations & Finance (precise title to be negotiated) will have the following responsibilities:
Operations
Develop and coordinate an annual operations plan, aligned to the organization's five-year strategic plan
Support expansion activities, especially in Ohio, which will include identifying and contracting for new office space, ensuring necessary infrastructure is developed and maintained, assisting in staffing issues, etc.
Upgrade and be responsible for human resources functions including: recruiting, on-boarding, training, development, compensation and benefits, and performance evaluation
Ensure that organizational processes and routines are efficient and effective
Analyze the current technology infrastructure and scope out the next level of information technology systems that support the growth of the organization and its inter-connections across several offices
Ensure that facilities (in DC and Ohio), IT infrastructure, and third-party services are top-notch, creating an environment where Fordham's team of policy professionals can be maximally effective
Ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations, including D.C. and Ohio nonprofit laws, federal 990 reporting requirements, and more
Promote a positive culture and high morale by organizing staff events, retreats, etc.
Finance
Develop and manage Fordham's budget and its many component parts, tracking actuals, developing projections, and guiding short- and long-term planning
Oversee all accounting and financial reporting, coordinating the annual audit, signing off on reconciliations, approving payment authorizations, managing the accounting staff, and more
Oversee the endowment (currently $43 M), working with outside consultants, fund managers and the board's investment committee to track performance, adjust allocations, select new managers, fund capital calls, consider unique opportunities (e.g., program-related investments), and guide Fordham's long-term investment strategy
Oversee the work of the development manager, ensuring that we have a fundraising strategy to meet our budgetary and programmatic needs; strengthen relationships with current funders; and cultivate relationships with prospective funders
Maintain and implement financial and organizational controls
Maintain banking, lending, law firm, insurance, investment advisory, and other fiscal relationships
Manage cash flow from the endowment and outside funders
Oversee vendor relations, payroll processing, and general office management
Senior Leadership
Work with the board of trustees; present to the board at meetings three times a year; and staff the board's Audit & Risk committee
Serve on the senior leadership team, along with the President, Executive Vice President, Vice President for Ohio Programs and Policy, and Vice President for Research
Manage a staff of three (accounting manager, development manager, and staff assistant)
Provide support and coaching to managers and staff throughout the organization
