The Senior Policy Associate, Assessment and Accountability reports to the Senior Fellow of Assessment and Accountability and is responsible for supporting an integrated, coherent approach to guiding states in the transition to high-quality, aligned college- and career-ready (CCR) assessments, and providing guidance to states as they work to value, measure and incentivize college and career readiness in their accountability systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Conduct research to identify leading practices for the transition to CCR assessments and accountability systems, engaging with states in individual and cross-state conversations to surface leading practices as well as significant challenges and opportunities.
· Support the development and dissemination of tools (including technical, strategic, and communication materials) that elevate leading practices for states as they transition to CCR assessments and accountability systems.
- Facilitate and provide technical assistance to assist states towards strategic implementation and transition to CCR assessments and accountability systems, as well as public engagement strategies needed for sustainable political support, public will and resource opportunities.
· Provide planning and support for multistate meetings related to providing states policy and implementation guidance to evolve assessment and accountability systems.
· Lead research and writing to develop strategic, policy and technical guidance to states on assessment and accountability trends based on cutting edge research and emerging practices.
· Work with states to foster stakeholder engagement to inform and build support for transitions to CCR assessments and accountability systems.
· Monitor and evaluate state efforts to advance and implement the college-and career-ready agenda, with specific attention to state assessment and accountability systems.
· Build upon Achieve's expertise in assessments and accountability by staying current about relevant research from national and international sources, developing short white papers/briefs on various topics, and attending appropriate meetings/conferences and disseminating information back to Achieve staff.
· Provide external leadership by speaking and representing Achieve at meetings of key audiences and advocates for Achieve's agenda with policymakers and professionals at state and national levels.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
The ideal candidate has a Masters degree in public policy, an analytic discipline or an education-related discipline and a minimum of 5 years of experience in the education policy arena. This position is based in the Washington, DC office but will require travel up to 15% nationally.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Collaborate with the Director on the development and execution of Achieve's communications strategy
· Develop communications strategies that will broaden programmatic reach and deepen impact.
· Lead communications strategy and execution for select Achieve projects.
· Draft and edit press releases and media advisories.
· Plan and lead Achieve's social media strategies.
· Pitch stories to traditional, digital and social media.
· Respond to media inquiries and arrange media interviews for Achieve staff.
· Be able to occasionally serve as Achieve spokesperson with media.
· Assist in the plan and execution of media tasks for the Achieve's annual meeting.
· Conduct web-based research.
· Prepare Achieve media kits.
Print and Online Content:
· Assist with the production of Achieve's monthly newsletter.
· Assist website manager maintain fresh web copy, including program descriptions and resources.
· Ensures factual accuracy and AP style in print and online content.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
Internal: All Achieve Staff and consultants
External: Media, state and local policymakers, Achieve partners and key stakeholders
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor's degree plus 4-6 years related experience.
- Master's degree may be substituted for two years of experience.
- Education policy and/or communications experience a must; either at the state or local level is a plus.
- Experience in new/social media.
- Proven ability to manage multiple short and long-term projects in a fast paced environment
- Effective time management skills.
- Ability to work well in a team environment.
- Proven research, writing, and communication skills.
- Deep knowledge of the Common Core State Standards and/or the Next Generation Science Standards a plus.
- Persistence, resourcefulness, drive and ability to work proactively.
- Ability to build collegial relationships with colleagues, state representatives, project consultants and others in order to achieve a goal.
- Comprehensive knowledge of state education policy and reform processes.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, under considerable pressure and tight deadlines.
