[YEP-DC] #NationofMakers, National Week of Making Information for Sharing and Participation

Good afternoon--

I am excited to email you about the National Week of Making (wh.gov/nation-of-makers) from June 17th through the 23rd as I think you would have a great time joining in the fun! I have actually been working on an organizing team of folks in the Federal Government planning for and supporting the National Week of Making. As a result, I've seen first-hand that there are lots of ways to get involved all over the country. In DC, for example, the National Week of Making will coincide with the National Maker Faire, which is being co-produced by Maker Media and the local DC non-profit, NationOfMakers.org. This hands-on event is happening at the University of the District of Columbia on June 18th and 19th (you can learn more about that on their site at makerfaire.com/national. The deadline to submit a proposal for activity in the National Makerfaire is May 27th).

To build on last year's National Week of Making, the team I'm a part of is working to celebrate the diversity of makers across the U.S. and to tell the stories of how communities are embracing the Maker Movement. We feel strongly that more people need to hear about the impact that the work so many are doing is having on everything from education and entrepreneurship to manufacturing and local problem solving.

As a supporter of creative learning spaces, I thought you might be interested in this national conversation on making.

There are many ways to get involved with the Week of Making,--from hosting community events to highlighting maker profiles etc--but I wanted to highlight two upcoming opportunities to share out:

1)      Nominate a Maker as a White House Champion of Change by May 18th: The White House will be celebrating Champions of Change for Making during the National Week of Making (June 17-23) by sharing a few stories of the countless leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, and educators who work daily within their local communities across the country. This is an opportunity to identify those Champions who are working to make advances in technology, platforms, educational opportunities, or spaces that empower even more Americans to become tinkerers, inventors, and entrepreneurs. Learn more about the call and how to submit a nomination here: https://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2016/05/04/support-nation-makers-and-nominate-white-house-champion-change

I've included some hashtags and images that can be shared through social media at the end of this message. Also, you can share this White House tweet on the request for nominations:

2)      Respond to the Call-to-Action –An opportunity to support the growth of the Maker Movement. Actions by organizations have the potential be compiled and distributed in a fact sheet during the Week of Making by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. You can submit ideas online at https://www.whitehouse.gov/webform/nation-makers-new-activities-and-potential-commitments

As a team our overall goal is to involve communities at all levels with making of all kinds.  While we know making is a relatively new term, it definitely describes something that is as old as human society and is the mash up of art and technology. As a group we are purposing defining "making" as broadly as possible and include (but do not limit it to) programming, textiles, electronics, 3D printing, model-building, trade-skills like welding and carpentry, cooking, farming, and so many other creative endeavors.  We also hope to generate excitement among K-12 youth about career pathways, inviting them to begin now by building a better world through their creativity today.

As always, please don't hesitate to let me know if you or your team have any additional questions. I look forward to celebrating a nation of makers with you!

Stay updated at whitehouse.gov/nation-of-makers and follow the community conversation online at #NationOfMakers, and also #WeekofMaking.

Thanks!

Lakita
